It was so near but so far for Leo Messi at the Ballon d’Or Gala on Monday at the Kongresshaus in Zurich. The Argentinian has been named world player of the year on four occasions (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), but a fifth honour has eluded him after the trophy was presented for the second year in a row to Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona’s Leo Messi came second in this year’s voting for the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2014 with 15.76% of the votes, topped only by Cristiano Ronaldo, who took the award with 37.66%. Third place went to Manuel Neuer (15.72%), while another Barça player Neymar Jr, came seventh with 2.21%.

"My ambitions for this year are the same as any other" said the Barça striker. "Which are to win everything we’re playing for. We know it’ll be difficult, but we’ll fight hard to win titles".

Leo Messi and Andrés Iniesta have both been included in the 2014 FIFPro team of the year, the outcome of votes cast by more than 60,000 professional footballers from all around the world. Messi has now been included in the XI for the past eight years (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) while this is the sixth appearance for Iniesta (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014).

FC Barcelona had not beaten Atlético Madrid in six matches, their last win coming on 12 May 2013 when they won 2-1 in the Vicente Calderón. The last six meetings, all last season, had ended with five draws and a defeat for the blaugranes.
