For FC Barcelona, matches against Elche CF this season have come to represent one thing: hope. The Luis Enrique reign started with optimism, as Barça cruised to victory against Elche in their La Liga opener. The feeling after the match was that Barcelona were set to improve under the guidance of their new coach, and for a while at least, they did. Then we had a little blip. Then we were thrown into crisis, and back came Elche, this time in the Copa del Rey.
In the aftermath of a well-publicised showdown between Enrique and Lionel Messi, Barça produced one of their better performances of the season so far; it was a result that assuaged the fears of some Culés and once again gave them hope. Hope that the future was not as bleak as it first appeared.
And so far, it hasn't been bleak at all; quite the opposite, that Elche result kick started our season and now we're on a roll. We beat Atletico Madrid, twice, and also smashed Deportivo La Coruña; but before all that we faced Elche again, this time with the kids and fringe players and won just as convincingly as before. They represent the future of this club, and indeed the fringe players will be just as important in the short-term, picking up results when we need to rest key faces.
There's confidence at the club again, a hope that we can and will challenge on all fronts this season; all we need to do to keep that going is beat Elche this evening.
