When the January transfer window opened a month ago, it was a certainty that we had seen the end of Martín Montoya's stint as a Barcelona player. The La Masia product was very unhappy with the lack of minutes and opportunities under new coach Luis Enrique, and his agent stated publicly that the possibility of Montoya leaving Barça was "close to 100%".
Well, that did not happen. With two days left in the winter window, no team has made an offer that includes paying Montoya's buyout clause, of €20 million. Sources told Barça Blaugranes that the interest from teams like AC Milan, Inter Milan and others disappeared after the 23-year-old was inserted in the rotation by his coach, and they don't plan to acquire the player.
Also, with the imminent departure of Dani Alves, it appears that Lucho gained trust in Montoya and wants to give him the starting job next season. Since the Catalan club is under the transfer ban in 2015, Martín would be a no-brainer to replace Alves once he goes to England. If he underperforms, then Barça would look for another right-back once they're free to buy again. But for now, Lucho is willing to trust his squad and give Montoya a real chance to show he's the right man for the job.
Montoya has started in five of Barça's last ten games, and he has performed well in all of them. If he continues to play at a high level, maybe he's not leaving after all.
