Full name: Marc-André ter Stegen

Squad No: 1

Position: Goalkeeper

Date of birth: 30 April 1992

Place of birth: Mönchengladbach, Germany

Height: 1.87 m (6 ft 2 in)

Weight: 85 kg (187 lbs)

Marc-André ter Stegen was born in Mönchengladbach, a city located near the very western edge of Germany, only about 15km from the border with the Netherlands. Marc-Andre started playing football at a very early age, joining the youth ranks of local club Borussia Mönchengladbach at the tender age of four.

From an early age ter Stegen was regarded as a very talented goalkeeper that has a bright future ahead of him. The youngster kept working hard and made his way through the youth ranks of the German club. For the 2009-10 season he joined Borussia Mönchengladbach II, the club's reserve team, where he spent parts of two seasons, but he only appeared in 18 matches for the team. The biggest reason behind that low number, however, were not poor performances, but the fact that he spent many games sitting on the bench of first team.

Ter Stegen made his first team debut 20 days before his 19th birthday, replacing usual starter Logan Bailly for the match against 1. FC Köln. Not only did the young goalkeeper not disappoint, but he impressed to the point that he started all remaining five games of the season, keeping a clean sheet in four of them. He had to deal with high pressure situations very early in his career as after this six game stretch, in which he gave up only three goals, he led Borussia Mönchengladbach through a successful campaign in the relegation playoff.

Ter Stegen cemented his place as the No. 1 goalkeeper in the next season, a spot that he never came close to relinquishing over the next three season, and in each and every season he showed why he was regarded as one of the most promising young goaltenders in the world. Many teams started closely following his progress with Barcelona being one of his strongest pursuers.

The pursuit lasted a long period, but by the time ter Stegen played his last game for his hometown club his transfer was made official. It was a very emotional game for the young German who sent a winning, and tearful, goodbye to Borussia Mönchengladbach. A €12 million transfer fee was required for Barcelona to complete the transfer, making ter Stegen just the second German goalkeeper in history to wear Blaugrana colors. In the few months since joining the Catalan club ter Stegen has made 10 appearances, all in the Champions League and in the Copa del Rey.

Despite being only 22 years old ter Stegen has been long present on the international stage, playing his first game for Germany at the U-16 level in the 2007-08 season. The following season he was part of the winning squad at the U-17 European Championship, starting all five games in the tournament, allowing only two goals. Ter Stegen also represented Germany at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 age levels. Despite facing fierce competition ter Stegen has already been capped four times at the senior level, making his debut in a friendly match against Switzerland in 2012.

Profile

Ter Stegen is a tall goalkeeper who is very strong in all facets of the game. He is known for his strong aerial ability and reading of the game, as a result of which he rarely gets caught in no man's land on high crosses. His reflexes are very sharp, but one of his best areas of the game is his passing, where he has confidence in playing the ball with both feet. Goalkeepers of his youth are prone to mistakes, but because ter Stegen already has considerable experience those are few and far between.

Ter Stegen is currently in the first year of the five year deal he signed upon joining FC Barcelona, a contract that will run out in 2019.
