Assigning grades to the goalkeepers.
One more season is behind us, so let’s look at how each player did. These grades are assigned versus expectations, meaning they are not absolute scores, but relative ones. Today, the goalkeepers.
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
Ter Stegen gave a great account of himself in his first season as Barcelona’s undisputed #1. Sure, at times he made the wrong choice when playing the ball from the back, but more often than not, he made not just the right choice, but superlative plays building up play. He also kept the team in many games with notable saves. This, while his former competitor for the Barcelona gloves, Claudio Bravo, had a miserable season with Manchester City.
Grade: A
Jasper Cilliessen
Cilliessen didn’t play much, but when he did, he impressed. The bulk of his appearances came in the Copa del Rey, where he was in especially good form against Atletico Madrid in the semifinal. Cilliessen wasn’t called on much, but he delivered when needed. Next season, Cilliessen intends to challenge Ter Stegen’s superiority. I’m not sure he will be able to, but given his good start, he’s welcome to try.
Grade: B+
Jordi Masip
Didn’t play a single minute, as he got injured when he would have played: in the early stages of the Copa del Rey. It remains to be seen how long Masip will accept not playing.
Grade: N/A
Claudio Bravo
You may have forgotten by now, but Bravo actually played three matches for Barcelona during the season, both legs of the Spanish Supercup and one game in La Liga. That’s more than Masip, then. He kept clean sheets in both Supercup legs, winning his last trophy before being sold. He seemed to totally lose his form after, but that was City’s problem..
