La Liga: RCD Espanyol 0-0 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing draw against Espanyol in La Liga.

Claudio Bravo
7.0
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 34
Passes: 27
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots Faced: 1
Saves Made: 1
Interceptions: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

It was one of the easier games of the season for Bravo who only had to make a single save as the defense in front of him did a good job of clearing the danger. Apart from that the Chilean once again how good he is with the ball at his feet and he handles pressure in those situations very well.

Dani Alves
5.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 87
Passes: 61
Pass Accuracy: 86%
Key Passes: 0
Turnovers: 5
Tackles: 4
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Clearances: 1
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Interceptions: 3

Bostjan says: 5.5

A disappointing showing from Alves who after a string of strong performances couldn't really get anything going on the right side. He often struggled to hold possession, leading to too many turnovers and wayward passes. Defensively he was solid, but his attacking game left much to be desired.

Gerard Pique
6.5
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 83
Passes: 70
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 1
Clearances: 6
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Turnovers: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

Pique was tasked with the tough job of makring the skillful Felipe Caicedo, and he did a very good job at it. The central defender's positional game made his plays look easier than they were, resulting in the fact that Pique made more clearances than any Barcelona player on the pitch.

Javier Mascherano
6.0
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 65
Passes: 60
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Tackles: 1
Interceptions: 1
Clearances: 2
Aerial Duels Won: 2
Fouls: 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

Apart from a showing contest with Álvaro González in the Barcelona penalty area, Mascherano wasn't really noticed a whole lot. He made a couple of defensive plays and played a pretty solid game, boosted by a pretty strong positional showing.

Jordi Alba
5.8
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 80
Passes: 62
Pass Accuracy: 86%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 2
Clearances: 3
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 3

Bostjan says: 6.0

When was the last time Alba managed to finish off an easy chance? Not even ten minutes in, the left-back had a gorgeous opportunity to score what just could've been the game-winning goal, but Alba sent what appeared to be an easy chance wide of the target. Defensively Alba made a couple of very good plays, but not even that could take the sting away from the missed chance.

Sergio Busquets
6.6
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 87
Passes: 74
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Tackles: 4
Interceptions: 4
Clearances: 1
Turnovers: 0
Aerial Duels Won: 7
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 5

Sam says: 7.5
They always say, if you’re not going to win the game, you better make sure you don’t lose it. Busquets was key in ensuring Barça didn’t lose it. Espanyol showed a willingness to consistently close down and pressure the defence meaning Barça required an outlet such as Busquets throughout the game. He completed the joint most tackles and the most interceptions as well as the most passes of any player.
Ivan Rakitić
5.9
Minutes played: 70
Touches: 59
Passes: 47
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Turnovers: 1
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 1
Tackles: 3

Sam says: 7.0

Rakitić played well in a tough match and came close to breaking the deadlock for Barça. He seemed the most willing of the three midfielders to get forward and would routinely move forward to link with the forward players. However sometimes he seemed to stagnate the play rather than progress it and a substitution for Sergi Roberto was the logical decision.

Andres Iniesta
6.5
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 86
Passes: 68
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 0
Turnovers: 5
Successful Dribbles: 7
Key Passes: 0
Interceptions: 2

Sam says: 7.0

Clearly one of the targeted players when it came to the hard tackles, Iniesta had to rely on his quick thinking and great dribbling to do anything effective with the ball. His incredible ball control in the first half showed examples of why he’s considered one of the best dribblers of the ball. But, like many of his teammates, he struggled to execute the final ball. His chances created were more half chances and failed to open up Espanyol.

Lionel Messi
6.0
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 62
Passes: 41
Pass Accuracy: 78%
Shots/Shots on Target: 4/1
Turnovers: 7
Successful Dribbles: 4
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 4
Interceptions: 1

Bostjan says: 7.0

Not one of Messi's best games of the season, but the Argentine still came very close to scoring the only goal of the game as his first half long-range free kick clanged of the frame of the goal. Otherwise he was largely kept in check by the Espanyol defense.

Luis Suarez
6.0
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 36
Passes: 24
Pass Accuracy: 75%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 2
Successful Dribbles: 3
Key Passes: 2
Turnovers: 3
Clearances: 1

Bostjan says: 6.5

Despite being the top goalscorer of the La Liga, Suarez has managed to miss numerous chances this season and the game against Espanyol was no different. Suarez was active throughout the game but his best move of the game came in the 54th minute when he easily skipped past the goalkeeper only to inexplicably miss the wide open goal.

Neymar
6.5
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 81
Passes: 50
Pass Accuracy: 82%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Successful Dribbles: 4
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 5
Turnovers: 10
Tackles: 2

Bostjan says: 7.5

Arguably the most dangerous Barcelona player on the pitch, but not even all of Neymar's magic could help Barcelona against their city rivals. The Brazilian was constantly on the move, making dribbles, but in the end it was all too little. The fact that he turned the ball over, not counting misplaced passes, an even ten times should also come as a concern as most of Neymar's successful games came when his turnover numbers are much lower.

Sergi Roberto
5.8
Minutes played: 20
Touches: 14
Passes: 12
Pass Accuracy: 42%
Tackles: 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

Not much to be said about Roberto's performance as he didn't really make much of a difference.

The Team 5.7
Passes: 624
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 10/2
Tackles: 22
Aerial Battles Won: 59%
Fouls Won/Committed: 22/10

Bostjan says: 6.0
Should we be worried about all the draws lately? Probably not, but the fact that three of the last four Barcelona's league games ended tied led to Barcelona losing their La Liga lead for the first time since Week 10 and it's high time the Catalans get a winning streak going because not winning against teams like Deportivo and Espanyol could result in an unhappy ending come May.
Luis Enrique
5.9

Bostjan says: 6.0

Lucho did many thinks right in this one as he, most importantly, sent out his best available team for what he knew was going to be a very dificult game. Like so many times this season he was hampered by a short bench as he again couldn't find an X factor to make a difference against a tiring team - hopefully this was the last game this happens now that the transfer window has opened.

MOTM - Lionel Messi
24%

Bostjan says: Suarez

When Barcelona play the way they did against Espanyol it should really come as no surprise the community couldn't decide who to vote for - six players picked up more than 9% of the votes. In the end Messi edged it with Neymar (17%) and Busquets (16%) finishing in second and third, respectively.
