With the completion of the Round of 16 on Thursday, the Spanish Federation took the time on Friday to draw the eight remaining teams into four Copa del Rey quarter-final matchups, and after dispatching local rivals Espanyol this week, Barcelona will have another tough opponent ahead.
The Blaugrana will face Athletic Bilbao starting next Wednesday, which means the two teams will see each other three times in the next 11 days, since they're also scheduled for a La Liga match, this Sunday at Camp Nou. The second and decisive match will take place at Camp Nou, with the first leg happening at the beautiful San Mamés.
Barça and Bilbao have seen a lot of each other in recent months. It started on May 30th of last year in the 2015 Spanish Cup Final, won by the Blaugranes with a 3-1 win. Three months later, they faced off in the Spanish Super Cup, and this time Bilbao got the better with a 5-1 aggregate victory. In the middle of the Super Cup, they saw each other in La Liga at San Mamés, and Barça won this one thanks to a goal from Luis Suárez.
With three games in January, we should expect this rivalry to grow a little bit more. And some really tough games as well. It won't be easy for Barça to qualify for the semi-finals.
But this is not the only matchup in the quarter-finals. Another really interesting game is Atlético Madrid against Celta Vigo, a difficult game for the Colchoneros. The full results of the draw:
Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona
Celta Vigo vs Atlético Madrid
Sevilla vs Mirandés
Valencia vs Las Palmas
I just have one question: where's Real Madrid?
