Report: Arsenal set to pay buyout fee on Sergi Samper contract

It looks like Arsene Wenger will never give up on buying Barcelona B wonder-kids and bringing them to Arsenal to become the next Cesc Fàbregas.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the Arsenal manager is keen on signing Sergi Samper, and is willing to buyout his contract for a €12 million fee and lure him out of Camp Nou for a move to the Premier League. The 20-year-old midfielder has had impressive performances on the first team, including on the 2-1 preseason win over LA Galaxy.

Widely regarded as the future replacement to Sergio Busquets, Samper is everything you could ask for a defensive midfielder who plays for Barcelona: great defender, great passer, great vision, calm, poise and stamina to endure 90 minutes of protecting the defense and building up plays.

It makes sense for Wenger to want a player like Samper, since he has begun to implement a more tiki-taka style to the Gooners, and he uses Francis Coquelin as that Busi-esque CDM. However, he still needs an upgrade on that position, and Samper would be a guy not just for the future, but also for the present.

The Blaugrana are not even close to listening the offer, however, and even if his contract is bought out, Samper has never indicated any remote desire to go somewhere else.

Chill out, Wenger.
