Luuk de Jong shaping up to be a worse signing than Douglas

What was the point?!

Luuk de Jong and Barcelona. They don’t even belong in the same sentence.

What an absolute waste of time and energy it was in acquiring him for a season. ‘Better than Braithwaite’ they said. Really? REALLY?

Koeman went even further, claiming the Dutchman was, ‘more dangerous than Neymar.’

My God, I’ve never seen a player so ill fitting for the club in which he plays. An absolute disaster in every single way.

There are literally no discernible traits that qualify him to be wearing the blaugrana.

‘He’s a great header of the ball.’ Whoever said that needs to examine the evidence in front of them because the handful of chances he’s had so far this season have all gone begging.

That doesn’t speak of a striker whose heading is supposedly his forte.

He can’t get in behind defences because he clearly doesn’t have the nous, and there’s little point in pumping balls over the top because he runs at a snail’s pace.

What on earth are Barca doing pumping balls over the top anyway?!

Koeman’s suggestion that they’re doing what they can with what they have available has a grain of truth to it, but the blaugranes simply don’t play football in the manner in which he has had them doing so in the last couple of games.

As a Cruyff disciple, he should know that more than anyone.

Can you believe that he’s still failed to beat Cadiz in the three games played against them now. Utterly clueless when it comes to the tactics needed to beat a team playing a low block.

Memphis has tailed off after a decent start to his career at the Camp Nou, but he too is suffering from a crisis of confidence in front of goal.

At least with him you know that there is more to come, and, eventually, he’ll find his scoring boots on a regular basis.

De Jong is just a lost cause already. Moreover, Koeman can use his presence as the excuse as to why they’re playing such a baffling ‘anti Barca’ game at present.

That, maybe, would be fine if De Jong was doing the business in front of goal, but he looks a world away from being a Barca player.

Of course, the other problem on the horizon is that the return of Ansu is now win or bust in a sense. He’ll be seen as Barca’s new saviour. Ansu-dependence if you like.

To put such pressure on his young shoulders, however good he is, is a little unfair.

Not to mention that he’s coming back from a serious injury and will need time to adapt to the pace of the games again.

What a sorry state of affairs.
