What a performance!

Barcelona Femení continued their perfect start to the Primera División season with a sensational 8-0 win over Valencia at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. Barça Women scored five in a span of 10 minutes in the first half, continued to attack and add goals in the second and have nine points from nine with 18 goals scored and three clean sheets. Can’t get much better than that.

FIRST HALF

Barça dominated possession from the very start and sent plenty of bodies forward, but Valencia started well defensively, denying spaces in the middle with a 4-5-1 shape and forcing Barça to cross the ball into the box to try and find chances.

The first 20 minutes had no real opportunities, but Asisat Oshoala changed the game when she didn’t give up and went to press the goalkeeper, and the Nigerian striker blocked Enith’s clearance and found the back of the net to give Barça the lead.

That goal began a spectacular 10-minute sequence in which Barça scored FIVE GOALS: after Oshoala’s opener, Alexia Putellas scored a hat-trick in a span of four minutes, with a powerful finish after nutmegging her defender for the first, a forty-yard strike to lob the keeper for a Puskás Award contender for her second, and a perfect header after a cross from Graham for the third. Mariona Caldente added a fifth just a minute later, and Barça wrapped up the win.

At halftime, Barça were in full control and winning by five with some brilliant goals, and they would continue looking for more in the second half.

SECOND HALF

The second half started with Barça’s sixth goal, as Oshoala reacted first to a great cross by Patri Guijarro to score her second of the afternoon just 53 seconds into the period, and the Catalans extended her dominance even further.

With a six-goal lead so early in the game, Jonatan Giráldez decided to make substitutions and the pace of the game naturally slowed down, but Barça continued to dominate the ball and still looked for more.

They got a seventh after a short corner routine and a perfect cross from Claudia Pina to find Lieke Martens all alone for a simple header and the Dutch superstar’s first goal of the season. Even up seven, they continued to attack and hit the crossbar twice, and then Caroline Graham Hansen made it 8-0 with a beautiful strike into the top corner to put the cherry on top.

The final whistle came to end another amazing performance and victory from the champions, who remain just as dominant in the league as we inch closer to the start of the European season. What a team.
