Messi didn’t just have Maradona’s shirt and celebration

Lionel Messi paid tribute to his former manager and spiritual predecessor with a celebration in Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Osasuna. After scoring, Messi took off his shirt and revealed Diego Maradona’s #10 shirt from his time at Newell’s Old Boys. Messi also celebrated by adopting Maradona’s celebratory pose.

Maradona was, according to many, the best to ever play, and had died a few days before the match. But it wasn’t just the shirt and the celebration that Messi copied, but, astonishingly, the goal itself.

Messi’s goal looked like a mirror of Maradona’s goal against Emelec, his only for Newell’s, Messi’s boyhood club.

Messi has been compared to Maradona his whole life. They are of a similar stature (Maradona is 5’5”, Messi 5’7”), both are left footed, both are Argentine, both wear #10, and both are attacking playmakers with similar styles. They are perhaps the two greatest dribblers to ever play, and both are known as much for their scoring as their ability to create opportunities for others.

As a 19 year old, Messi scored a goal that looked almost like an exact copy of Maradona’s most famous goal, which he scored against England in the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Messi also somewhat recreated another famous Maradona goal from the same match, the “Hand of God” goal which Maradona scored with his hand.
