It’s hard to imagine any other player ever getting this kind of offer

Lionel Messi could join Manchester City on a free transfer next year, and he could be linked with the Premier League club’s parent organization for a very long time.

A new report out of England says the City Football Group will offer the Argentine superstar a 10 year deal which would see him first play for Manchester City, and then, when he was ready, play for any of CFG’s other clubs. He could also take on an ambassadorial job after retirement.

Perhaps most intriguingly, that could set up a move to New York City FC, a team CFG owns in majority. The idea of Messi in New York sounds like a huge event in world football, but there are other options: Australia’s Melbourne City FC and Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos sound like possibilities. CFG also owns all of or a stake in five other clubs, although a move to these seems even more unlikely.

Messi publicly recognized he wanted to move on from Barcelona last summer, but he was prevented from doing so by the Catalans. However, they may no longer be able to compel him against his will any longer, as his contract runs out soon.

It is said that City think that having his former mentor, Pep Guardiola, as their manager will tantalize the Argentine to join, something that would cause CFG’s marketing revenues to skyrocket.
