Paper attempts to apologize for racist Ansu Fati comments

A poor response has been offered

The Spanish newspaper ABC made headlines this week when they wrote their match report after Barcelona’s Champions League win and said that Ansu Fati’s pace was that of a “black street vendor fleeing the police.”

Given this is a blatantly incompetent and racist piece of writing, an apology was expected. We got some form of an apology from the author Salvador Sostres, but not an apology to Fati himself.

“As I attempted to highlight the beauty of Ansu’ movement, and his class as a young player, some expressions were interpreted as racial discrimination.

“That could not be further from my intentions, or opinions, which are very favourable towards the player, as I have always expressed in my match reports since he made his debut.

“I deeply apologise for the misunderstanding and to those who may have been offended.”

This isn’t some sort of poorly worded article that was lost in translation. This was clearly racist and deserved a deep apology from the author, editor, and paper. What we got was a poorly worded apology that didn’t even apologize directly to Fati.

It’s disheartening and sad that Fati had to experience something like this at all. ABC isn’t a small newspaper and this wasn’t a little mistake. Barcelona’s legal team is looking into what sort of action they could take according to Mundo Deportivo.
