The defender could sign on until 2026
Barcelona have reportedly opened talks with center-back Ronald Araujo over a new contract at the Camp Nou.
The Catalan giants want to keep hold of the 21-year-old and are negotiating an extension that will run until 2026, according to Marca.
Araujo’s current deal does not expire until 2023 but Barca want to reward the Uruguay international for his recent progress at the club. The defender has been officially promoted to the first team for 2020-21 and has been handed the No. 4 shirt.
Negotiations are said to be “on the right track” but are not yet finalized as there are “still a few details to be resolved.”
Meanwhile, Araujo looks set to start for Barcelona on Wednesday in the Champions League against Juventus as Gerard Pique is suspended for the trip to Turin.
Barca have been busy with contract renewals in recent days with talks motivated by the need to reduce some players’ salaries due to the club’s financial problems.
The club announced last week that Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Pique, Clement Lenglet and Frenkie de Jong had all extended, and it seems that Araujo could be next in line.
