Barcelona attempts to stave off the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on their bottom line
Sergio Busquets, Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann, and Sergi Roberto are in discussions to reduce their salaries as a temporary cost-cutting measure as Barcelona attempts to limit the damage from the coronavirus pandemic, according to ESPN.
Recently, Barcelona announced renewals for Gerard Piqué, Marc-André ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong, and Clément Lenglet, which contained short-term salary decreases.
It’s understood that the players would receive compensation later on in their contracts as a way of making up for the fact that they lowered their salaries in the short term.
Barcelona have faced huge losses due to the pandemic and had to move on players with high salaries such as Luis Suárez and Arturo Vidal.
The club is attempting to cut salaries across both playing staff and non-playing staff alike, with a committee set up to oversee the efforts. However, the players will not be represented in those negotiations because of disagreements with how the board, and especially club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, have decided to approach the matter. It’s been reported that the players do not believe non-playing taff should see their salaries cut.
Players who negotiate new deals and players who have been recently signed in the transfer market will be exempt from this negotiation.
