Barcelona 2016/17 Review: Flop of the Season

The Barça men who haven’t hit the heights expected of them.

André Gomes

We’ll start with the one everyone is thinking of. Summer signing André Gomes has had a torrid time since joining the Catalans. Trying to break through into the midfield partnership, Gomes has come to symbolise everything that is wrong with this current Barça squad. The lack of a midfield has at times been unfairly pinned on him when it should be the Barcelona board taking the blame. As the season progressed, he was playing with less and less confidence and it showed. His first touch let him down, his passes weren’t accurate and he favoured the easy option more often than not.

His performance in the Copa del Rey final did give some hope to Barça fans who will hope the Portuguese will start repaying his hefty transfer fee next season.

Arda Turan

Not necessarily a flop but more a player who has had a difficult season. Hampered by injuries, Turan has found his game time cut down and has struggled to make any real impact. In his defence, he has often been played as part of the midfield three when it is clear his best positions is one of the wide spots in the front three.

Disappointingly for Turan, he has been rumoured to be out the exit door this summer.

Paco Alcácer

Like Gomes, Alcácer endured a difficult start to his Barça career. Unable to find the net until December, he was making no real claims that he should start over Luis Suárez. After his first goal went in he did begin to improve and played well in the Copa del Rey final, grabbing himself a goal but the new coach Ernesto Valverde will want to see a consistent stream of him finding the net.

Alcácer is well aware he won’t be starting games but he does have the potential to cause Valverde selection problems should he return to his Valencia form.
