Barcelona right-back Douglas Pereira out eight weeks with hamstring injury

Douglas Pereira wanted to turn the corner in Barcelona's preseason. But now he's out.

After a terrible start in the friendly against Chelsea on Tuesday night, the Brazilian right-back was suddenly subbed off by coach Luis Enrique. One might have thought the coach was fed up with such a bad game by Douglas, but in the end he was forced to; during a simple play in which he attempted a pass back to goalkeeper Ter Stegen after a run on the right side, he started limping heavily, then fell to the ground showing that his night was done.

The doctors were quick to diagnose a full hamstring tear in his right leg, thanks to the always amazing medical facilities you can find at any NFL stadium, which is also the case at FedEx Field, the site of the friendly. After the diagnose, a date was set on his return:

The Club's medical services have announced that Douglas has suffered a hamstring injury in his right leg. He is expected to be out for around eight weeks

Even though Douglas is not a world-class full-back, and his few appearances at Barça have been far from impressing, his presence on the squad is now important. The loan of Martín Montoya to Inter Milan instantly turned Douglas into the immediate backup to starting right-back Dani Alves.

Luckily, Luis Enrique tested an interesting alternative in the preseason: midfielder Sergi Roberto played as a full-back for the better part of 120 minutes combined against Manchester United and Chelsea, and his performances were encouraging. His versatility can now prove to be fundamental as Barça will have only one full-back until October.
