Barcelona president speaks out on UEFA fine: "We disagree with the ruling"

Because of flags and signs supporting the independence of Catalonia during the UEFA Champions League Final last June, Barcelona was fined €30,000 by the European Federation, but the club is not willing to just pay and let things go without putting up a fight.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke to the Washington Post on Sunday, and he was clear in his position: the club supports its fans, encourages their freedom of speech and will not let the ruling slide without defending the supporters' rights.

Here's the president's quotes:

"FC Barcelona has always defended, and will always defend, freedom of speech."

"Futbol Club Barcelona has never banned its members or fans from expressing their thoughts and feelings in a peaceful manner in our stadium or when supporting our team when they travel."

"FC Barcelona disagrees with the ruling will ask for the case to be reviewed."

"We are fully convinced that the rights of our members are untouchable and should not be given a political connotation."

"We remain supportive of our members and the spirit of freedom in which this club has relied since its foundation 115 years ago."
