Referee Named for December El Clasico

Carlos Clos Gómez will referee the first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season

The RFEF, the Spanish Football Federation, appointed 44-year-old Carlos Clos Gómez to officiate the first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season, which will be played on December 3 2016 at the Camp Nou. It will be the first time Clos Gómez will referee a league game of arguably the biggest derby in football. Clos Gómez has previously taken charge of two Clasicos, one in the Supercopa de España, won by Barcelona by a score of 3-2, and a Copa del Rey Semifinal that ended one-all.

Clos Gómez hails from Zaragoza, Aragon, and has been a referee for ten years. The Spaniard has been an UEFA class referee since 2009 and has been a fixture in European competitions, especially European Qualifiers for the European and World Championships, and the Europa League.

Barcelona have enjoyed good success with Clos Gómez in charge, not losing a single one of the 20 matches officiated by the Zaragoza native. Barcelona have won 17 of those games with four penalties for and two against.

Real Madrid’s record is not that impressive with Clos Gómez dealing justice as they have won "only" 18 of 27, losing four, but do have a better penalty record, with five for and not a single one against.
