The youngster has impressed this season

Gavi has been one of the revelations of the season so far with the 17-year-old impressing in the Barcelona first team and already called up to the Spain squad by Luis Enrique.

It’s been a rapid rise by the teenager who looks to have a big future ahead of him at the Camp Nou and could make his international debut this week in the Nations League.

According to Diario Sport, Barcelona now want to improve and extend Gavi’s contract and have already been in touch with his agent to begin talks.

The midfielder only signed a renewal just over 12 months ago which runs until the end of June 2023 and contains a buyout clause set at €50 million.

Barca’s plan is to extend Gavi’s contract until 2026 and increase his buyout clause to €500 million which is in line with other youngsters such as Nico Gonzalez and Alejandro Balde.

The report reckons that Barca need to check with FIFA and talk to Gavi’s agent to see if this is possible as the midfielder is still under 18. FIFA rules state minors can’t renew contracts for more than three years but Spanish Law differs.

Barca will study all options and could find a solution by offering a three-year deal with the option for two more or something similar. In any case Barca are confident Gavi wants to stay as “his desire has always been to succeed” at the Camp Nou.
