Another record for the midfielder

Barcelona midfielder Gavi wrote his name into the history books on Sunday when he was named in Ronald Koeman’s starting XI against Real Madrid

The Spain international is the youngest player to feature in El Clasico this century at the age of 17 years and 80 days. He beats the record previously held by....Pedri who started aged 17 years and 334 days.

Gavi is also the youngest player to start in the crunch game between the two Spanish giants for 80 years and the sixth youngest of all time behind only Alfonso Albéniz (1902), Armando Giralt (1902), René Petit (1916), José Bayo (1936) and Vicente Martinez (1941) (stats from MisterChip).

It’s been an extraordinary rise for Gavi who only made his debut for the Catalan giants in August, becoming the fourth youngest Barça player to ever appear in La Liga when he came on against Getafe.

The teenager followed that up by becoming the youngest player ever to feature for Spain in October when he made his debut against Italy in the Nations League at the age of just 17 years and 62 days.

With Pedri still out injured it was no surprise to see Gavi in the starting XI against Real Madrid. The teenage lined up alongside captain Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong once again in midfield.

Gavi was one of seven homegrown players in the lineup with Gerard Pique, Eric Garcia, Busquets, Ansu Fati, Oscar Mingueza, and Jordi Alba also in Koeman’s XI.
