The Dutchman is yet to beat Real Madrid
Ronald Koeman reckons his Barcelona team are getting closer to winning some big games after losing 2-1 to Real Madrid on Sunday in La Liga.
The Dutchman oversaw yet another defeat in a key fixture and has become only the second coach in history to lose his first three Clasicos.
Koeman says Barca proved on Sunday that “we’re not inferior” to Real Madrid and also seems to think his team are heading in the right direction.
Here’s what he had to say in his post-match press conference.
“Of course we have to demand that we win these games,” he said.
“In the game today we have shown that we’re not inferior to Madrid. But instead of going 1-0 up, we go 1-0 down and that has a massive effect on the match. But we have shown that, little by little, we’re improving and we’re closer to winning big games.”
Barca should have taken the lead when Sergino Dest somehow managed to blaze over the crossbar when it seemed easier to score and Koeman felt his team had started the game well.
“We were good in the first half. We controlled the game well and we had a big chance to take the lead, but once they score the first they can play their game in the second half,” he added.
“They played to their strengths, waiting and defending. And we did not have any big chances to level. You need to attack and take risks, but you know Madrid’s strength in counterattacking play.”

Koeman must pick his players up quickly from Sunday’s defeat with a trip to Rayo Vallecano up next on Wednesday. The newly-promoted side have started the season well and have a point more than Barca, although they have played a game extra.
