A question that has to be answered.
Dani Alves was not happy to leave Barcelona. In fact he seemed very bitter about the whole thing. But the board didn’t want him, and Alves felt disrespected. After 8 years at Barcelona, he went to Juventus.
Barcelona had two players in mind to replace him - Sergi Roberto and Aleix Vidal. Roberto started strong as a right-back but never felt comfortable, played some poor games, and now has been shifted back to a midfield player. Vidal started poorly, then found his groove, then got injured.
The Catalans basically have no right-back at the moment, while Juventus have a plethora and Alves is the best of the bunch. That disparity was not the only factor, but it felt poignant as Juve beat Barcelona 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League clash.
With the benefit of hindsight, did Barcelona make a mistake letting Alves go? Or was the mistake not signing another replacement? Or was it just bad luck with Vidal’s injury?
