1. With Messi anything is possible
We ran out of superlatives for Lionel Messi a long time ago, so let’s just stick to the facts.
He scored his 48th goal of the season against Real Madrid, he now has 500 in a Barcelona shirt, he’s the greatest Clasico goalscorer of all time – and on Sunday night at the Bernabeu he proved yet again that he is the greatest football player the world has ever seen.
Madrid tried everything to stop him, Casemiro took 11 minutes before being booked for a late challenge, Marcelo’s elbow left him on the turf covered in blood, while Sergio Ramos’s wild lunge saw him handed a straight red.
They tried to stop him and they simply couldn’t and while he ended the match bloodied and bruised, he also ended it by holding his shirt aloft after scoring a 92nd minute winner.
"Imagine, 500 goals, a winner here in 92nd minute, to win the game,” mused Luis Enrique after the game. We didn’t have to imagine though, Messi made it happen.
2. The title race is on and Madrid have problems
Make no mistake the title race is back on, Barcelona sit top of the table with a better head-to-head record and just five games left to play.
Of course Madrid have a game in hand, but they also have the added distraction of a Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid to worry about.
Sergio Ramos’ red card also means Zinedine Zidane has all sorts of problems in defence.
Pepe and Raphael Varane are out injured, which leaves just one recognised centre-back Nacho, available for Wednesday’s trip to Deportivo.
3. Luis Suarez is struggling
It’s now five games without a goal for Luis Suarez and while his work-rate cannot be faulted his confidence looks to have dropped and he desperately needs to find the back of the net, and fast.
His first touch was poor at the Bernabeu and he fired an excellent chance well wide before Keylor Navas denied him his best chance of the game, after a great ball from Andres Iniesta.
Fortunately for Suarez, Messi had one of those games, and perhaps even more fortunately Osasuna are the next visitors to Camp Nou on Wednesday.
La Liga’s bottom side have the worst defence in the league, they’ve conceded 75 goals in 33 games - Suarez will not get a better chance to get back on track.
