Juventus 3-0 Barcelona, 2017 Champions League: Player Ratings

The scores for a horrendous night in Turin.

Marc-André ter Stegen

Not a massive amount he could do for either of the opening goals. Dybala’s powerful, accurate attempts are a keeper’s worst nightmare as they leave you no time to get down. Did on occasion in the first half look nervous as the Juventus pressure built.

Jeremy Mathieu

Very clearly targeted by Juventus as they looked to get one-on-ones with him and Juan Cuadrado. Was at fault for the first goal as he backed off and backed off until Cuadrado could pick out Dybala. Given the hook at half time for Andre Gomes.

Gerard Piqué

Barça’s best defender. Looked to be the only one playing to the team’s usual high standards. Winning balls and covering well at times. Not too much blame on him for either of Juventus’ first half goals.

Samuel Umtiti

Tried his best alongside Piqué but the quick movement of Juventus is too much for one man to stop. Puzzling why it was not him marking Chiellini on the corner for the home side’s third.

Javier Mascherano

Tasked with man-marking Dybala, Mascherano didn’t ever get close. His compatriot had the pace and technique to get away from Mascherano every time and punished Barça by scoring two great goals. Then tasked with man-marking Chiellini at a corner which resulted in Juventus’ third.

Sergi Roberto

Looked lost in the first half as he was unsure of what position he was supposed to be in. Drifted in and around midfield but only became more effective in the second half following a formation change.

Andrés Iniesta 5.0

Missed a golden opportunity to make it 1-1. Running on the outside of Dani Alves, he was picked out superbly by Messi but didn’t get enough bend on his shot to get it around Buffon. Juve went up the other end and made it 2-0. Routinely tried to get something going but just couldn’t.

Ivan Rakitić

Spent more time arguing with Juventus players than he did having any meaningful impact on the game. A poor game from the Croatian that only picked up slightly in the second half.

Luis Suárez

Anonymous in the first half as he was marked out of the game by the Juventus defence. Was not entirely his fault though as the midfield failed to find him over and over again. Improved in the second half but nowhere near his usual standard.

Neymar

Perhaps the most active of the front three in the first half, Neymar saw plenty of the ball but it was in areas in which it was almost impossible to create something. Faded in the second as frustration set in.

Lionel Messi

Barcelona’s best player. The only one to produce genuine moments of quality including two incredible passes that should have resulted in goals. Even with an increased defensive prescience around him, he continue to create opportunities.

Andre Gomes

Bringing on an unpopular player when you are 2-0 down is hardly going to appease the fans but his introduction did see a switch back to 4-3-3 which created more chances. He himself was pretty uneventful and lost the ball on a couple of occasions.

Luis Enrique

Outthought in the first half, the 3 at the back where exposed and the planning of the game to position Mascherano on Dybala simply didn’t work. Only made one substitution and seemed out of ideas.

The Team

Poor all around bar Messi. Deserved 3-0 losers.
