La Liga News: 18 February 2016; Real Madrid beats Roma in Champions League duty

The Stadio Olimpico did not witness a shot on target until the 57th minute but it was worth waiting for as Marcelo released Cristiano Ronaldo for a trademark strike, cutting in from the left. Roma rallied yet could not find an equaliser and substitute Jesé rounded off Zinédine Zidane's coaching debut in the competition in style.
Zinédine Zidane hailed his team's patience and cohesion as they made the most of their chances in a 2-0 win at Roma that leaves them well placed for a quarter-final spot.
Real Madrid's Marcelo was grateful to the "fantastic" Cristiano Ronaldo for breaking down an intransigent Roma defence, paving the way for a "massive result" in the round of 16 first leg.
Villarreal Coach Marcelino believes the Europa League tie with Napoli is in the balance before a ball has been kicked. The Yellow Submarine host the Serie A side in Thursday’s first leg and Marcelino is wary of the team who, until last weekend, were top of the table in Italy.
Unai Emery dismissed as speculation a link to Atletico Madrid and discussed where the Copa del Rey Final should be held.
Valencia have been in contact with Napoli’s Raul Abiol as Jesus Garcia Pitarch builds a squad for next season. Super Deporte notes the Spain international defender has been offered a new contract by his Italian employers but has yet to give a positive response.
Rayo Vallecano are waiting to see how Jozabed Sanchez’s ankle progresses before ruling him out of Sunday’s game against Sevilla.
Xabi Prieto believes Real Sociedad are going into Sunday’s Basque derby with Athletic Bilbao in good humour. La Real have won their three previous games and veteran Prieto pointed to that as the reason for what he sees is a positive atmosphere among the squad.
