The president will keep the Dutchman regardless of what happens against Atlético Madrid

In a shocking turn of events on Saturday morning in Spain, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed Ronald Koeman will remain as the first team head coach regardless of the result of Saturday’s La Liga match against Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

All reports from Spain indicated that this would be Koeman’s final game in charge of the club, but Laporta spoke to reporters at the hotel the team is staying in Madrid and said his decision is to keep the Dutchman because of his legend status and Barça’s current situation.

Here is the full quote from the president:

“Ronald Koeman will continue as Barcelona coach, we believe he deserves a margin of confidence of many reasons. He is a Barça man, a legend in our world. He will continue and deserves a margin of confidence.

“Koeman loves Barça and decided to come in a moment of maximum institutional and sporting difficulty. After speaking to him I see that he trusts this team, especially when the injured players return. When that happens, we will have better chances. Koeman is a Culé and a Barça legend, he will continue as coach, has a contract and we hope to get back to winning ways and good football. I am certain he will give his all.

“We can understand the fans’ reaction to this issue because the results aren’t coming, but I ask them to have a margin of confidence with the coach. He deserves it. I also ask them to trust this team because once the injured players return it will be even more competitive.

“I have spoken to him and made my conclusions. He is a Barça legend, I value that he came to Barça in a difficult moment. I may have been discouraged at times but now I am encouraged, now that the injured players will return he deserves a margin of confidence. We have spoken and it is not true that we have a cold relationship. It is a good and honest relationship, he is a good person and I believe he feels the same way about me. We are all trying to turn this around.”

So Laporta thinks Koeman is a legend and deserves a margin of confidence, and he said it so many times that it almost sounds disingenuous and simply a public statement of support for the coach before a big game. Part of me can’t help but think none of this is true. What do you think, Barça fans?
