‘I’m sure I could have learned a lot from him’
Yusuf Demir has been talking about life at Barcelona while on international duty with Austria and has admitted the departure of Lionel Messi “hurt a lot” and that he felt he could have learnt a lot from the GOAT had he stayed.
The 18-year-old has previously been dubbed the ‘Austrian Messi’ and was initially signed on loan for Barcelona B before being promoted to the first team and handed the No. 11 shirt for the 2021-22 season.
Demir has made it clear how disappointed he was to see the Argentine leave the Camp Nou for PSG this summer.
“First and foremost, it actually hurt a lot. I’m sure I could have learned a lot from him,” he said.
“We don’t have to talk about his standing in the team in Barcelona and what he has built up. It hurts, that he’s gone. On the other hand, you have to accept it and make the best of it.”
It’s been a tough season for Barcelona so far but Demir says he’s not listening to the team’s critics and is simply trying to focus on his football.
“I don’t read newspapers,” he said.
“But I actually try to concentrate on football every day. Criticism or not, that doesn’t really interest me. The most important thing is: We play football. We enjoy it, I enjoy it.
“Everyone knows that we have a very young team that is hungry and wants to fight for all the trophies. It is a difficult moment that we have to live together. But I am sure that we will come out of this crisis, if you can call it that.”

Demir has made five appearances so far for Barca and it will be interesting to see if he can get regular minutes now Ansu Fati is back fit and with Sergio Aguero and Ousmane Dembele also due back soon.
The youngster’s current deal include a purchase option set at €10 million which Barca have previously been tipped to activate.
