Ansu Fati & Pedri could be the first to be announced
It’s been a month since the transfer window shut, but in Barcelona, it’s time for action. There are many players at the club whose renewals are currently being worked on. In this report, we’ll be talking about them one by one:
Ansu Fati (contract expires in 2022)
The first player on the list is Barça’s new No. 10 and Spain international Ansu Fati. As per multiple reports, Barcelona have already made contacts with Jorge Mendes. the player’s agent, to express their desire to sign the youngster on a new long-term deal. Just last month, Mendes and Ansu also met in a restaurant. The 18-year-old forward informed his agent that he only wants to stay at Barcelona at all costs, despite knowing the financial situation of the club. Although nothing is advanced yet, Joan Laporta told RAC1 in an interview this morning that “it’s going on the right track”.
Pedri (contract expires in 2022)
The youngster who has probably made the biggest breakthrough in this past year is midfielder Pedri. Talks have already started and are going very well. especially since the player wants to remain at Barcelona and is willing to have his salary adjusted how the club wants to, in this case a year after year increase. He understands the situation. Laporta also told RAC1 that Pedri’s renewal is “quite advanced.”
Ronald Araujo (contract expires in 2023)
A lesser ‘emergency’ is the contract of Uruguay’s Ronald Araujo, but the club is still very interested (obviously) in renewing his deal. ESPN advanced last month that the club had already made initial contacts with his agent earlier this summer to express their interest in holding out on Araujo for the long-term...and just today, MD’s Ferran Martinez has reported new contacts were made between the parties last month and more are expected this month. Similarily like Pedri and Ansu Fati, Araujo too wants to stay at Barcelona and isn’t considering anything else at the moment.
Ousmane Dembele (contract expires in 2022)
His situation is very different to the first two players mentioned above, since not much progress has happened so far. Not long ago, there was reportedly a meeting between the club, Dembele and the player’s agent to discuss about a renewal. Multiple reports suggest he is ‘open’ to staying. but many in the club are suspicious over the player’s agent and how he is trying to delay renewal talks in order to reach an agreement under better terms. Dembele’s renewal isn’t something that is expected to be ‘imminent’ and will take some time. Should both parties be unable to find an agreement, he can legally start negotiating with another club from January — certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
Oscar Mingueza (contract expires in 2023)
Not really a player Barcelona are desperately looking to renew, since they just extended him on a new deal in the summer. But, as per Ferran Martinez, the club would like to improve the terms in his contract.
Sergi Roberto (contract expires in 2022)
The renewal of Barça’s third-captain, Sergi Roberto, is also being worked on. Some weeks ago, his renewal was all but done — however, the situation is slightly different now. His agent commented to MD a few days ago “the renewal is currently frozen, but can be reactivated at any time.” The case doesn’t seem to be ‘completely broken’ as of yet, since Joan Laporta told RAC1 this morning, “it’s not done yet, since we’re still working on polishing the details”. If Roberto does end up renewing, it’ll be on a lower salary until 2024.
Gavi (contract expires in 2023)
Last but not at all the least, following his sudden breakthrough, Barcelona have also started talking with the 17-year-old’s agent about a new contract as per multiple reports in Spain and Italy. Although not much has happened in this situation, since it’s not been long since negotiations first started — but the young midfielder wants to stay at Barcelona. The duration of his contract is something which will be known once talks are more advanced, since FIFA doesn’t allow U-18 players to renew for more than three years, while Spanish legislation says five years.
