The Belgium coach is ‘almost ruled out’

Barcelona have reportedly lost interest in the possibility of Roberto Martinez taking over from Ronald Koeman and have “almost ruled out” the Belgium coach as a candidate.

Koeman’s future remains uncertain after a disappointing start even though he’s been backed over the international break by president Joan Laporta.

Martinez is one of several names that have been mentioned as a possible replacement for Koeman, although the Belgium boss has played down the prospect of a Camp Nou move.

According to Catalunya Radio, the last time Barca chiefs met to discuss the option of bringing in Martinez it was pretty much decided he’s no longer in the running.

Apparently it was decided the Belgium chief simply “isnt the best option” and even Jordi Cruyff, who had initially championed Martinez, agreed with the decision.

Martinez’s Belgium suffered heartbreak in the Nations League semi-finals in midweek. The team were 2-0 up against France but went on to lose 3-2 to the world champions.
