The former president wants to get back in the driver’s seat

Joan Laporta, FC Barcelona’s club president from 2003 until 2010, wants to be the club’s president for a second spell. He’s officially launched a campaign to win the post, one that came as no surprise to those in the know, as strong rumors have been hinting at this eventuality for a long time.

A lawyer, Laporta also served as an MP in the Parliament of Catalonia after leaving FC Barcelona.

Under his leadership, Barcelona won the treble for the very first time in 2009. He went under tumultuous times as well, most notably in 2008, when a motion of no confidence almost forced an exit. He was pressured to resign, but he resisted. A noted supporter of Catalan independence, he was also criticized for allegedly mixing sports with his personal politics.

Still, the lasting memory of his reign seems to be the “sextuple” team that won six trophies in 2009 and defended La Liga in 2010, making Laporta a formidable candidate for the presidency.

His toughest opposition at the moment seems to be Victor Font, who has been openly campaigning for longer than Laporta. Font has secured partnerships with influential people including some club legends, and was a vocal leader in the motion of no confidence that ultimately resulted in the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona’s now-former president.

Font welcomed his new opponent to the race with “affection and gratitude” for Laporta’s role in that legendary Barça that came to fruition during his reign.
