The Frenchman made a very strong case for himself, and he has Cules buzzing about a great first game.
Lucas Digne is building a following among Barcelona fans. The left-back came on for Jeremy Mathieu in the 25th minute of Barcelona's eventual 2-0 win over Sevilla in the Supercup and delivered a classy performance many fans are interpreting as a portent of things to come.
The Frenchman was brought in to replace Adriano as the team's #2 left-back, so it was somewhat surprising to see Mathieu start instead. Possibly, Luis Enrique considered the occasion too big to hand a player a debut in defense, but it seems he was wrong. As a forced substitution, Digne played a very good game and never looked out of his depth in a clash between two Spanish titans.
His first touch was good, his passing was insightful and ambitious, and his defensive work was rarely panicky. He looked the part, every bit. He also made more headers than I've ever seen Jordi Alba make in his life. I mean. Just saying.
The excitement was such that you can forgive the odd comment saying Digne will bench Alba now. That's a bit premature, to say the least. It was just one game, and not even a full 90 at that. But what a start!
A couple other youngsters deserved high praise today - Denis Suarez, who created the first goal, and Munir, who finished the second. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the team's 23-and-under contingent - Sergi Samper, Samuel Umtiti, Rafinha, and Andre Gomes - will fare this season.
