A few takeaways from a victory that gave Barça the first title of the season
Barcelona are #Superchampions of Spain after winning the Spanish Super Cup with two fantastic wins over Sevilla, the latest a 3-0 dominant victory at Camp Nou, which gave the Blaugrana the eighth of possible ten titles under coach Luis Enrique. As we continue to celebrate another piece of silverware, here's a few takeaways from what we saw at Camp Nou:
1 - Samuel Umtiti is a monster
It had been a while since Barça were able to say they had an physically dominant player in the team. Umtiti is one of those, and it is really impressive to watch him combine an insane physical prowess with technical quality and positional awareness. Samuel is a complete defender, and even though he committed a dumb penalty he was very, very good. So calm under pressure, good passing, and a strong presence inside the box. Great player. And he's 22!!!!
2 - André Gomes looks amazing
I was very skeptical of this signing, and not just because of the price. I hadn't seen anything from Gomes at Valencia or Portugal that got me excited for him joining the Blaugrana. But his 90 minutes against Sevilla were just fantastic. His passing is simply otherworldly, and his vision is insane. His pass to Lucas Digne in the buildup to Messi's goal was just an example of how he sees things most players can't. He's so calm and composed with the ball, and no matter how big the pressure was from the Sevilla players, he always made the right decision. It's too early in the season to definitively say he's a great signing, but he is so far. And he's 23!!!!
3 - Barça look incredibly strong this season
The first two preseasons under Luis Enrique were a little worrying. The team looked poor and there weren't too many options on the bench. The results from the first few official matches caused concern, and the performances especially didn't give us any cause for excitement. Somehow, Lucho and the players turned both of those bad preseasons into the best team in the world. This time around, the team looks strong from the beginning. The new signings are already adapting to the style of play, the performances have been good, and one of the best players in the world (Neymar) is still yet to join the side. This great preseason means nothing without trophies in May and June, but the early signs point to a fantastic year ahead of us.
