Here we are, a few hours away from the start of a new La Liga season, and let me just say upfront that it's been a long time coming. It feels like an eternity ago that we were celebrating our latest title triumph; in fact it was only a few months ago. Maybe that's my perception of time messing me around; whatever the case the old saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder couldn't be more apt in this scenario; I simply can't wait for Barcelona to be back in truly competitive action.
After a couple of tight matches on Friday evening between Malaga and Osasuna, and Deportivo La Coruna and Eibar, Barcelona will kick-off tonight at the Camp Nou knowing that a win could easily take them top. Malaga were pegged back by a late equaliser from Fran Merida (of all people) in their opening fixture at La Rosaleda, while Depor only emerged victorious courtesy of a late penalty from Lucas Perez at the Riazor. A two-goal win tonight would put the Blaugrana clear on top as well as pile the pressure on Atletico and Real Madrid who start their seasons on Sunday.
Of course, even though this is a new season and we're supposed to be full of hope and optimism, Real Betis will be a tough opponent for Luis Enrique's side. Gus Poyet was combative midfielder in his day and with the players he has at his disposal, he could bring a team that cause us problems. Ruben Castro as we all know has a particular fondness for scoring against us -- so this is far from being a foregone conclusion.
