On the same day that Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced his signing with Manchester United even though he's not even had a medical yet, Neymar is following the trend and gave Barcelona fans worldwide a reason to smile.
The Brazilian superstar sent out this tweet on his official account on Thursday:
"I'm very happy to continue living this dream! VISCA BARÇA and VISCA CATALUNYA"
Neymar has apparently signed a five-year contract extension with Barça, and will remain a Blaugrana through 2021. Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke about the renewal on his press conference, saying he was nearing a deal with the player's entourage and a new contract should be announced over the next few days.
Well, screw the press release. Neymar is announcing it himself. Better come directly from the source. We can stop the PSG and Real Madrid rumors, now. At least until next year.

The European Championships reaches its most exciting time: the quarterfinals. The last eight nations left in Euro 2016 square off over the next four days hoping to find a place in the semifinals. We're going to see four fascinating matchups, with great stories all around, and it should be a super fun weekend of football.
Up first, Poland and Portugal face off at the beautiful Vélodrome in Marseille, and this is a battle of two of the best goalscorers in Europe. Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski have been somewhat quiet so far in the tournament, but two of the best players on the planet can certainly catch fire at any moment, especially in such a big game.
But beyond the superstars on the pitch, we see some good players in both supporting casts. Kuba Blaszczykowski has regained his form as a workhorse on the wings, Arkadiusz Milik is a talented player, and Grzegorz Krychowiak is the brains of the operation for Poland. Portugal also has a talented midfield, with André Gomes, William Carvalho and Ricardo Quaresma capable of effecting the game in their own ways.
This should be a great game, and you're invited to watch and comment with us. Have fun!

Barcelona fans have always screamed for the signing of a young, talented, promising center-back to contribute now and develop well into a great defender in the future. This has finally happened.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that the club have completed the transfer of Olympique Lyonnais center-back Samuel Umtiti. The 22-year-old France international is current playing in Euro 2016, and will join the club at the completion of the Europen Championships for medicals and a five-year contract signing.
The best, most surprising aspect of this transfer is the value. Bartomeu confirmed that Barça will pay Lyon a €25 million transfer fee, with added performance bonuses, like playing time and titles won, among others. Umtiti will cost at least half the price Barça would have to pay for a player like Marquinhos or Aymeric Laporte, the two most rumored targets of the summer.
Umtiti is a combination of strength and talent. Like every player of his age, he's a bit raw, but everyone who watches Lyon games knows this kid has potential to become a very good defender. He is left-footed, which is important to play alongside Gerard Piqué, and is very fast for his position, another key aspect of a Barça defender having to stop counter-attacks.
In today's market, €25 million is a great price for a player who could become a beast. It looks, sounds and smells like a great signing already.
Barça signing a young center-back? Yes, believe that.

To say that Argentina aren't taking Lionel Messi's retirement declaration well would be an understatement. The country and their leaders are doing everything in their power to try and convince the Barcelona star to reconsider his international retirement and come back.
We've already seen Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri, and all-time legend Diego Maradona plead with Messi to forget about his retirement. Now they're pulling out all of the stops.
On Tuesday, the city of Buenos Aires erected a statue of Lionel Messi as a gesture of goodwill to hopefully convince him to play for Argentina once again.
The city's mayor, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, made no bones about the purpose of the statue. "... I think (it is) a good way to ask Leo to come with us, and to remain together with us and for him to take us by the hand and to win."
He hopes that peer pressure on social media will be enough to win back Messi's heart and get him back with Argentina.
"... Take your picture with the statue of Leo and post it on social media as a way to ask Leo to stick with us," Larreta said.
Who knows exactly what Messi is thinking or if he'll ever play for Argentina again, but gestures like this can only help, I'd think.
Barcelona and the Brazilian Federation cut a deal a few months ago that allowed Neymar to participate in only one of the national team tournaments this summer. After missing the Copa América, the Barça superstar is back with the Seleção.
Neymar has been called up by U-23 coach Rogério Micale to be in the squad for the football tournament in the 2016 Olympic Games, which starts on August 4th in Brasília, when Brazil takes on South Africa. Brazil also faces Iraq and Denmark in the group stage.
The Brazil captain is able to play in the Olympics thanks to a rule that allowa three players over the age of 23 to be named in the squad. Along with Neymar are 37-year-old goalkeeper Fernando Prass from Palmeiras, and 25-year-old attacker Douglas Costa from Bayern Munich.
Rafinha Alcântara is the second Barça player called to the Brazil squad. Rafinha missed the South American Cup due to an injury, but recovered in time to be available for Rio 2016.
This is the 18-man that will represent the host nation:
Defenders: William (Internacional - BRA), Luan (Vasco da Gama - BRA), Rodrigo Caio (São Paulo - BRA), Marquinhos (Paris Saint-German - FRA), Douglas Santos (Atlético Mineiro - BRA), Zeca (Santos - BRA)
Midfielders: Rafinha (Barcelona - ESP), Rodrigo Dourado (Internacional - BRA), Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk - UKR), Thiago Maia (Santos - BRA), Felipe Anderson (Lazio - ITA)
Forwards: Neymar (Barcelona - ESP), Douglas Costa (Bayern Munich - GER), Gabriel Barbosa (Santos - BRA), Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras - BRA), Luan (Grêmio - BRA)
Neymar, Rafinha and the Seleção start a two-week training camp on July 18th, and hope to win the football tournament on August 20th, at Maracanã Stadium. Obviously, Neymar will miss the entire preseason preparation at Barcelona, and if Brazil reach the final, he will not play the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

Barça's Joan Gamper trophy opponents this year will be Sampdoria on either August 8 or 9. The choice hasn't been easy, with the Blaugrana initially wanting to play Ajax to commemorate the passing of Johan Cruyff on March 24.
Barça's away kit for the 2016/17 season has ditched the Catalan senyera design of the last campaign in favour of a more understated - but still interesting - choice by Nike.
Bartomeu last week sent general manager Raul Sanllehi to Brazil to speak directly with Neymar and his representatives as he was concerned over the delay to finalising the player’s renewal and Sanllehi’s presence has reportedly brought the sides closer, ‘millimetre by millimetre.’
Sport say Barca have followed the Portugal international for some time and the Catalans have decided to make their move this summer, feeling he fits in with what Barca need in the squad at the moment and that he is the level of player it takes to succeed at Camp Nou.
A study has been conducted in Brazil analysing the brains of top sporting athletes, including Barça's Neymar. These athletes already possess a characteristic in the brain that allows them to use only a small part when they're in action, but with a higher than average efficiency according to the study.

A few short weeks ago, the centenary edition of the Copa America was being universally derided, and labelled for what it was: a soulless, corporate cash grab. The play was uninspiring, the star names and teams were faltering, barely capturing any attention inside America, let alone outside of the two participating continents.
Attendances were embarrassingly low and with the negative press coverage fast becoming a theme, the world was ready to cut its losses. That was, until Lionel Messi announced his arrival in grand fashion.
His return from a troublesome back injury breathed new life into the competition. Trademark free-kicks were duly dispatched, defenses were carved apart with passes displaying surgical precision and it seemed like every moment of Messi magic promptly went viral. Once again this diminutive forward from Rosario had captivated the world and in doing so, he single-handedly transformed this anniversary edition of the Copa America into a spectacle.
We were being treated to Lionel Messi at his very best; in his four appearances leading up to the final, Leo had scored five and assisted another four in just 253 minutes of gametime. That’s an average of over three goals a game that originated from his left boot, or if you prefer, one every 28 minutes of action. The response?
Why can’t he play like that all the time?
Well, because the way that he was playing was already better than anyone who had ever played the game. There’s no acknowledgement that what Messi was achieving was completely unprecedented; once the final came and went without a winner’s medal, Messi knew that the knives were out.
This constant need to belittle Messi for his supposed shortcomings on the international stage merely shows humanity at its lowest ebb; here we have a vocal majority glibly turning a blind eye to genius, in what: an asinine bid to make their own failings more bearable?
For years, Messi gave his all for his country. He travelled across the globe; he endured the criticism from his own supporters, coupled with the heartbreak of defeat, and still he kept coming back for more in a quest for glory.
"All would be forgiven with one trophy" is what they said; "a chance to secure his legacy" was the headline echoed around the world headed into Sunday’s final, a reductive preview of what most clearly should not be a career-defining game for the greatest player of this, and perhaps every other generation.
Let’s forget that for the third year in succession, Messi had helped his country reach a major final, and for the third year in succession, the final was decided after the end of regulation play. Deprived of context, the world had somehow derived the most basic conclusion from all three finals: Argentina had ended up on the losing side, and so each of the three failures landed squarely at Lionel Messi’s feet.
As mercurial as Messi has been for Barcelona, it only lent credence to the belief that he was deemed to lack that certain je ne sais quoi on the international scene that the likes of Pele and Maradona had in spades. If he can produce like that for Barcelona, then why can’t he play like that all the time?
Why can’t he play like that in a final for Argentina?
Modern fandom is replete with this kind of rhetorical nonsense; context is readily discarded for convenience to suit whichever biased discourse is the flavour of the day. Why is it that the same question was never asked of dear old Diego? The popular view is that Maradona won the 1986 World Cup without a capable supporting cast, but the truth is that his legacy was cemented simply because his teammates converted their chances.
Without Jose Luis Brown, Jorge Valdano and Jorge Burruchaga, what would history say about Diego Maradona? And so, by the same token what would history say about Lionel Messi without Gonzalo Higuain?
In this post-Brexit, Donald Trump-nominating world, it’s no surprise that the general population continues to do itself, and all future generations a disservice if the response to Messi’s unprecedented greatness was heightened demands. Faced with appeasing a public that, on reflection, should have realised it was asking for the impossible...no wonder that Messi finally decided that enough was enough.
Yes, we have been robbed of his final act on the international scene, but we have no one to blame but ourselves.

In this column, Xoel Càrdenas gives you his take on Lionel Messi saying his time with the Argentine national team is over and why disappointment was Leo's destiny with Argentina.
The final of the Copa America Centenario was historic for many reasons.
But for Lionel Messi, it was potentially the end of a part of his career.
After 120 minutes of battle, Argentina lost to Chile 4-2 in penalties. For the third straight year, Argentina lost a third straight final.
After the match, the talk wasn't about Chile's back-to-back titles, it was what Messi said after the match. Messi told TyC Sports his time with the Argentine national team was over.
It's possible Messi has made a decision in the heat of the moment. He just lost another final and his frustration is at a peak.
But maybe he's serious and this is it.
The though of not ever seeing Lionel Messi wearing an Albiceleste kit is inconceivable.
Then again, Messi has made a career of making the football impossible possible.
Honestly, when Gonzalo Higuain missed the one-on-one chance in the first half, I felt that the night was not going to end well for Argentina. I just kept thinking it can't be just bad luck.
Angel Di Maria wasn't 100 percent and was subbed out. Another final lost for "El Fideo." Sergio Aguero came on and once again, another disappointing performance.
What made the night even worse was Messi's penalty kick. Leo sent the ball into the New Jersey sky, and with that, Messi's night ended with disappointment.
It was more than bad luck. It was destiny.
For someone who's won it all at Barcelona, it feels odd that Messi could not win a title with his national team. Then again, Argentina is obviously not FC Barcelona. But with all of the talent Argentina offers, you'd think at least the Albiceleste could've won a title.
But as the old saying goes: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
The talent at Argentina did not work hard enough on the pitch to win a title. Sure, many of the players tried hard during all three finals, Messi included, but those same players did not execute the finish. How does a team that normally scores three to four goals a match suddenly freeze in a final? Call it a choke, call it a weakness, call it whatever you want. There may not be a better word to define this generation's Argentine national team other than disappointing.
To see Messi cry was tough. He's a hero at Barcelona. But with Argentina, he's seen by some as a disappointment, a bottler, a choke artist, etc. Not everyone loves Leo, and in Argentina, he's not as appreciated as he is in Barcelona. Expectations were always so high, and unfortunately, it seems like Messi will never fulfill those expectations, fair or unfair.
— Sky Sports News HQ (@SkySportsNewsHQ) June 27, 2016
Of course, Barcelona fans were upset to see Messi cry because we want to see him get some sort of success with his national team. It seemed unfair to see Messi cry at the end of the match. But let's tell the truth, it was not unfair. Messi missed his penalty, his teammates didn't step up and Argentina deserved to lose. Credit must be given to Chile. They played better overall in the match and finished the job in penalties. Again, it was disappointing for Messi, but not unfair.
I now truly believe it is not meant to be for Lionel Messi to win a major title with Argentina. It can't just be bad luck anymore. Bad luck is temporary, but what Messi and this generation's Argentina team have endured is more than just bad luck. Why? Who knows. In sports, and in life, there are questions there are no answers to.
I hope Lionel Messi reconsiders and continues with the Argentine national team. But if it's truly the end, no one — and I mean no one — can say he didn't give everything he had. Messi gave 10 years to his national team. I know some will say he didn't, but I could care less about what those haters say. Three straight international finals is no small feat. Some will say, "Yeah, but he didn't win a final." What can we say? That's true. It's a shame and it will be the blemish in Messi's football career.
Still, Messi gave his all and left if all on the pitch. Those tears running down Leo's face were his pain, his sacrifice, his passion for his country, and his sadness knowing he was unable to bring his country a title.
The look on Messi's face seemed to express someone accepting one's sad fate. It hurt to watch — painful, if you will.
Leo Messi's heart has now been broken three times in three years. After a decade of service for the Argentine national team, maybe he's come to the realization that he gave all he had for the Albiceleste. Sadly, his all wasn't enough, it's a shame and there's nothing more is left to be said about it.
For three straight finals in three straight years:
Angel Di Maria was hurt (didn't even play in WC 2014 Final).
Sergio "Kun" Aguero did not perform to certain expectations.
Gonzalo Higuain missed a sitter that would've won Argentina a title.
Argentina couldn't win in 90 minutes.
Argentina couldn't win in 120 minutes, with two years in a row of losing in penalties.
Argentina was shut out.
Argentina lost in heart-breaking fashion.
Not one.
Not two.
But three finals in three years with Argentina.
It is all over for Spain, and quite a few Barcelona stars are going home.
The two-time defending champions have been knocked out of Euro 2016 after a 2-0 loss to Italy in the Round of 16, with goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pellè. It was an intense, nervous game that featured one of the best performances of the tournament from the Italians. Antonio Conte's side played perfectly on defense, sustained the pressure from La Roja and killed the Spaniards on the counter-attack.
After a formidable group stage, Spain is out in a painful way. Andrés Iniesta, who played so well in the first few games, was well marked and played below his usual form against Italy's fierce defense. Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets were also good in the group phase, but couldn't replicate their success in the biggest game of the tournament.
If there is a bright side to this, is that four of the most important Barça players will get a few extra days of rest before starting the preseason preparations with the club. But it is never fun to lose, especially for the reigning champions. And this Italy side is super scary. Super scary.
So Monday for Barça fans has Messi losing, Dani Alves leaving, and Spain losing. This is not fun.

The former Barcelona superstar has officially joined Serie A champions Juventus, the Italian club announced on Monday. Alves has signed a two-year contract, with a club option for an automatic one-year extension. Juventus has paid nothing for the transfer, since Dani activated a clause in his Barça contract that allowed him to leave for free.
Dani Alves is the greatest full-back in Barcelona history. The Bahia native arrived at Catalonia in the summer of 2008, and after eight seasons as a Blaugrana, Alves leaves the club with 23 trophies won. Alves is the second foreign player with most appearances in La Liga (239) in Barça history, and has won six league titles in his incredible career with the Catalan giants.
After enjoying major success under Pep Guardiola, Alves was constantly linked with a move away from the Blaugranes, especially after coach Luis Enrique joined the club. But Dani stuck around for the first two years of Lucho's tenure, and remained an integral part of the Barça system. He would always step up his game in the big matches, and his departure truly marks the end of an era at Camp Nou.
Thank you for everything, Dani. All the best at Juve, and you'll never be forgotten. There will never be another Dani Alves. Ever.
Obrigado, Dani.

After an underwhelming first day of Round of 16 matches, yesterday proved much more eventful. First France fought back after an early deficit to dispose of a resilient Republic of Ireland, which paved the way for two blowouts. Germany completely dismantled Slovakia to the tune of 3-0 and later Belgium one-upped the Germans, earning a 4-0 win over Hungary who had a fair share of chances themselves.
Today marks the last day of Round of 16 matches, and with only two spots left in the Quarter-Final there will only be two matches today. First up is arguably the most anticipated match of the Euro so far, as powerhouses of European football Italy and Spain will take on each other. Italy impressed in the group stages, only losing to a desperate Ireland while playing with their second team. Spain also looked to be building steam from one game to the other only to be stopped by a Croatia comeback in the last round. The amount of talent on both teams is staggering which should result in a mouth-watering contest.
Last but not least, Iceland will try to continue one of the best stories of the Euro by getting past their biggest challenge yet - England. Considered outsiders by many, Iceland are undefeated in their Euro campaign, winning one and drawing two, which is coincidentally the same record as England have. Iceland proved to be a thorn in the side of every team they faced so far and it is not expected they wold make England any favors today. Still, England are a big favorite in this match-up but Iceland could provide us wit the next surprise of this Euro.

The great thing about football is that from time to time we get these dream matches, even in international level. Monday gives us one of those dream games when Italy and Spain face off at Stade de France in their Euro 2016 Round of 16 matchup. This is a rematch of the 2012 Final comfortably won by the Spaniards, and it happens too damn early in this edition of the European Championships.
Spain needed to rebuild ever since that 2012 final happened, but they're still very good. A loss to Croatia in the last game of the group stage caused some concern about La Roja's chances and created some doubt over their real quality. But it also gave us a chance to watch them face Italy again, which gives us a spectacular football game to enjoy.
Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta represent Barcelona in this one. Do not miss it. This should be super fun.

Frustrations are clearly building after losing in a third straight international final.
Fresh off a defeat in a third straight international final on Sunday, Lionel Messi dropped an absolute bombshell: He’s retiring from the Argentina national team. It’s entirely possible that the 29-year-old was speaking more from emotion than anything else and that he changes his mind either sooner or later, but right now it looks like the international stage has lost its brightest star.
"We’ve lost four finals, and three straight," Messi told TYC Sports. "It’s a pity, but this is how it has to be. I’m finished with the National Team. That’s it."
Like this final, Argentina also lost to Chile in 2015 Copa America final on penalties. That was on the heals of a 1-0 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. Messi was also part of the 2007 Argentina team that lost to Brazil in the 2007 Copa America final, as well as the 2011 squad that slumped to a disappointing quarterfinal exit despite hosting the tournament.
"I think it’s the best thing for everyone concerned, for me, and for everyone who wants the team to win," he said. "I’ve made up my mind. I tried many times, but I wasn’t able to pull it off. I sought after it, it’s what I wanted the most. I wasn’t able to get it, but I think that’s that. It’s incredibly sad. On top of all that, I went and failed the penalty kick."
Although Messi scored five goals in the tournament and was the most dangerous player in what was a 0-0 tie, he did miss Argentina’s first penalty in the shootout. He had also expressed some frustrations over the national team’s off-field organization. It would appear, that was a bit of foreshadowing.

Chile have won the Copa América for a second straight year, repeating as champions beating Argentina on penalties once again to successfully defend their South American crown. Claudio Bravo represents Barcelona and gets to lift the trophy again as Chile captain.
But most Barça fans aren't happy after Sunday night in New Jersey. Argentina's loss means a third straight second-place finish for Lionel Messi at a major tournament with the national team -- along with the 2014 World Cup loss to Germany, and last year's loss to Chile. After pretty much carrying the Albiceleste on his back all the way to the final game, Messi couldn't finish the job.
He did have a few good moments here and there, but overall, Leo did not have his usual performance. He was turning the ball over at a scary rate, taking poor free-kicks and looking lost sometimes. And when it came time to take the first penalty in the shootout, which would have put Argentina in front after Arturo Vidal missed his shot, Messi shot the ball to the skies of East Rutherford.
It is easy to pick on Leo for Argentina's troubles. His haters will certainly be quick to that. It is also easy to forget how incredible Messi has been in the international level. For some weird reason, he and his teammates cannot seem to get the job done. It will come sometime, though. It has to. Messi cannot be so unbelievably unlucky with Argentina all the time.
Congrats to Bravo, though. Representing Barça with another title. Our summer is a little happier. Thanks, Claudio.

One-hundred minutes into the Copa America Centenario final and Argentina almost took the lead over Chile. If it wasn't for Barcelona's Claudio Bravo's amazing save it would've been the first goal of the match and one step closer to Lionel Messi's first ever major international title.
The Copa América Centenario ends this Sunday with the same final as last year: Argentina and Chile clash again for the South American Cup title, this time at MetLife Stadium, away from the home field advantage that gave the Chileans the title a year ago.
Things are a little different this time: Jorge Sampaoli, the creative and passionate Chile coach is no longer there, and Juan Antonio Pizzi's side is yet to replicate the former coach's entertaining style. Argentina are better, more experienced this time around, and Tata Martino has finally been able to make his talented team play beautiful, efficient football.
Argentina is the best team of the tournament by a mile, and Lionel Messi is a big reason why. The Barcelona superstar has led his men like a true captain and technical reference, and has outplayed the competition en route to a much deserved second straight final. The challenge now is to finally win a title. It has been 23 years since the Albiceleste has won a major tournament in the senior level. They are the best team, with the best player and have all the momentum on their side to win it all. Can they do it?
Messi, Javier Mascherano and Claudio Bravo represent Barcelona here. More importantly, this should be a badass football game, one you should not miss.

The striker spent two years at Juventus and was brought back with his €30m clause, but the future remains uncertain. "I don’t have to prove anything to Zidane and Real Madrid," Morata told Cuatro. "I’m not a Castilla player who is getting the chance to train with Real Madrid. The club will decide if I am to stay or not, but if I do continue my adventure in Madrid, I’ll give my all to earn a starting spot."
"It is lie after lie," he said. "You can mess with me because I don't have anything to lose but about the team? It's impossible, genuinely annoying and sad. Most people have a great sympathy towards us but some don't. Do you know what a jointer is? It is a tool to remove rough edges which cabinet makers use, although there are some evils it cannot remove. Against the selection or anything else, when you want to talk badly about someone, you just keep rubbing away."
According to L’Équipe, Reims defender Aïssa Mandi is set to join Spanish outfit Real Betis next season. The two clubs are in advanced negotiations over a €4m agreement with a sell-on percentage clause. Mandi had an offer from Middlesbrough and St Étienne, but has elected to join La Liga after giving Betis his agreement in principle.
Javi Gracia’s Rubin Kazan are understood to be closing in on the signature of Villarreal attacker Samu Garcia. Samu played just 16 times in La Liga for Villarreal last season, and Marca reports he is on the verge of reuniting with Gracia, the 25-year-old having begun his professional career under the Coach at Malaga. The newspaper cites sources close to the deal, who claim negotiations are well under way and could be concluded in the next few days.
Roma are attempting to coax Thomas Vermaelen from Barcelona for around €10m. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi have set their sights on the Belgium international. The 30-year-old centre-back is wanted for his versatility, as Luciano Spalletti is considering a three-man defence next season.
Malaga have completed the signings of Keko and Jony on four-year contracts after the pair left Eibar and Sporting Gijon respectively. Transfermarkt reports Keko has joined for a fee of €3.7m from Eibar, while Jony arrives on a free transfer following the expiration of his Sporting contract.

An unhappy Rakitic was in disbelief after his side's exit, saying: "They don't have a clue how they scored. If you ask them now how they scored, they probably wouldn't know. They say football is the best game in the world... but sometimes it is the dumbest thing in the world. That was tonight, because it is impossible that the better team has to go home. I don't know why things always break on our backs. Where is justice? Why is it always avoiding us?"
Aleix Vidal has no intention on playing a bench role for next season and his future will be decided upon when he meets with the directors of the La Liga champions promptly. The 26-year old right sided player has caught the eye of Roma, Napoli and Inter who are all ready to give him space to relaunch his career, according to Sky Sport.
Javier Mascheranocould finally be on his way to Juventus, afterBarcelonaappear to have found a replacement for the Argentina international. The reigning Serie A champions have been on the trail of the versatile defender for some time, but with the Catalan giants unwilling to sell, were expected to look elsewhere this summer.
Having come to Manchester United under the previous regime, full-back Matteo Darmian could find himself out the Old Trafford exit-door, with Barcelona considering a deal. As a star at Torino, and a regular Italian international, Louis van Gaal brought the 26-year-old to the Premier League, with the defender potentially not doing enough to impress new boss Jose Mourinho.
Argentina and Chile are set to do battle in the final of the Copa America in a repeat of last year’s final, with FC Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano, Leo Messi and Claudio Bravo likely to start for their nations. Following the disappointment of losing out on penalties in the final 12 months ago, Mascherano and Messi will be hungrier than ever to earn their first senior international medals. Bravo, on the other hand, will be looking to help his country secure a second consecutive Copa success, a year on from Chile’s first ever such trophy.
"Some Croatia players talk too much, they should just play." he told Record in post-match interviews. His remark is most likely referring to Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who was bullish in his pre-match predictions while specifically referring to Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The knockout stages of the 2016 European Championships are officially underway, and in truth, they've been something of a disappointment. Yesterday's matches were all close-fought encounters, but the majority of the games were devoid of any real action and excitement. If you strip away Xherdan Shaqiri's wondergoal from outside the area, the matches were, well, forgettable. Portugal stumbled through against an under-performing Croatia; Wales needed an own goal to see off Northern Ireland while Poland had to wait for penalties to dispatch Switzerland.
Hopefully today's matches will bring a little more entertainment. Up first, we have the hosts France, who as winners of Group A have been paired against Republic of Ireland in a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown. With Thierry Henry's handball very much on their minds, Ireland will be out for revenge. The only question is, do they have enough quality to trouble the likes of Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and company?
The second match of the day will see the World champions in action, as Germany take on Slovakia in Lille. The World Cup winners haven't exactly set this tournament alight just yet, with Thomas Muller in particular struggling to replicate his usually excellent international form, but they are still heavy favourites to progress to the next round. Slovakia stymied England in the group stage, but lacked any real offensive threat -- and the chances are, this one will be something of a procession for the Germans.
Then, finally, we have arguably the least interesting match of the day, as Belgium square off with Hungary in Toulouse. The winner of this match will book their place in a quarter-final against Wales, and frankly, that whole side of the draw is looking rather dull.
That's the line-up for today, stick around and comment on all the action right here.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas admits he "isn’t happy" with Brexit and insists Spanish football will not necessarily benefit from the Premier League "going wrong". The United Kingdom’s vote to withdraw from the European Union on Thursday is threatening to change the landscape of English football forever, with Spaniards at risk of seeing their opportunities of playing in the Premier League greatly diminished, but Tebas was disappointed with the potential loss of competition.
But frustration was admittedly the overriding emotion less than a year ago for 29-year-old Navas. "It’s not good when something like that happens but I’m not someone who is always looking back and I don’t bear any grudges," Navas told Spanish newspaper Marca. "The night of August 31 was a bitter pill I had to swallow but it’s already forgotten and everything is lovely."
Real MadridmanagerZinedine Zidanehas heaped praise on West Ham's Dimitri Payet following the player's impressive start to Euro 2016. The Hammers fear losing Payet to one of Europe's elite and Real are among a number of clubs interested in his services. Zidane's comments, then, will be viewed as something of a charm offensive in east London after the former France international voiced his belief that Payet would 'improve any side in Europe'.
Manchester United have been told they can have unsettled Real Madrid star James Rodriguez this summer. Colombia star Rodriguez, who joined Real for £56million after the 2014 World Cup, but could be available to United for around £50m. Reports in Spain claim Rodriguez has put his house up for sale, with his Madrid future uncertain after he failed to secure a regular starting place last season.
Real Madrid could have a very real problem following Great Britain's exit from the European Union. Thursday's historic vote would make Welsh superstar Gareth Bale a 'non-EU player' and is set to put the club over their limit of players from outside the EU. La Liga's foreign player policy only allows each club to have three players registered from outside the EU and the Spanish giants already have their quota full.

After two long days without football, the 2016 European Championships return today with knockout action, as the first three matches of the Round of 16 are set to be contested in Saint-Etienne, Paris and Lens. Arguably today is the weakest day of Round of 16 action, but all three matches look incredibly even on paper, and as such we could be in for three ultra-competitive games.
First up, we have the Group A runners-up, Switzerland, taking on another unbeaten side, Poland who also finished runners-up in their group despite accumulating seven points from their three matches. Poland are yet to concede a single goal this competition, a fact that becomes all the more impressive knowing that they had to contend with World champions, Germany. However, while their defense is holding firm, they are yet to get the best out of their star player, Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich striker is yet to score in the tournament, and if Poland wish to progress to the next round, they will be looking for Lewa to pick up his form.
Today's second game might just be the weakest of the knockout stages, as Brexiters Wales and Northern Ireland do battle at the Parc des Princes. With Wales backing the Leave vote, while Northern Ireland were one of the few regions in the UK intelligent enough to vote Remain, this game has something of a political subplot to it now, not that we'll see anything like that on the field. Northern Ireland are a bad football team, and they're facing another bad football team that at least has star players in the form of Aaron Ramsey, and Real Madrid superstar, Gareth Bale, who is currently tied as the tournament's top-scorer.
Luckily, after that "toilet break game", the action starts properly in the smallest host town of the competition, Lens. Of course, I'm talking about Croatia taking on Portugal. With a late goal on Tuesday, Croatia usurped Spain to claim top spot in Group D, and their prize was to be drawn against Portugal, who barely scraped through with three draws in three games. For Barcelona fans, this will surely be billed as Ivan Rakitic against Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, and when you put it like that, there can be no doubting who I will be rooting for when that starts at prime time.
That's our line-up for the day, stick around here to comment on all of the day's action.

"We need to take this chance and win the Copa whatever way we can" said a confident sounding Leo Messi ahead of Sunday’s Copa America Centenario final. The Barça striker is hoping it’ll be third time lucky after losing finals in 2007 to Brazil and 2015 to the same side the Albiceleste face in the final this year’s special edition in the United States, Chile.
Rakitic won La Liga with Barcelona last season, finishing a point above Ronaldo’s Real Madrid, and the 28-year-old is confident he can get the upper-hand over his opposite number at international level. "Cristiano Ronaldo cannot win without the rest of the [Portugal] team. I was ahead of him and Real Madrid with Barca, I hope for the same outcome at the European Championship. We don't think about the trophy, but go step-by-step and I think we're powerful enough to eliminate Portugal."
Xavi considers Conte's Italy side to be a mixture of aspects from the Spanish teams Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. "He's applied what he did at Juventus. They defend deep, and are able to play with or without the ball, I believe Italy are a mix of Barcelona and Atletico. You always have your great history as well. Even if you switched the entire starting XI you still have that fight. Italy have always been dangerous." said the former Barcelona star.
"I always get asked about Lionel Messi and how Cristiano regards him," Ancelotti, who will take over at Bayern Munich ahead of the new season, wrote in The Telegraph. "The truth is, we did not spend all our days at Madrid talking about Messi. "Cristiano respects Messi; he respects him a lot. In a way I think they need one another. Each one pushes the other to new heights, to new records of goalscoring.
There is "zero" chance of Neymar joining Real Madrid, according to the player's father, who also played down speculation his son could leave Barcelona at all. In an interview with Fox Brazil, Neymar Sr. insisted Barcelona are aware of interest in their player but stressed the club are in control of the forward, who still has two years to run on his contract at the Camp Nou.
The Camp Nou was the venue for yet another historic event on Friday night. But for once, it was not for football. Instead, it was rugby’s oval ball that took centre stage on a memorable day for the sport. There were 99,124 people in the Barça stadium to watch the final of the French championship, the Top 14, between Racing 92 and RC Toulon, which had been moved from its traditional Parisian home to the Catalan capital due to Euro 2016 being held this month in France.

As you may have heard, Lionel Messi became Argentina's all-time leading goal scorer on Tuesday with his stunning free kick against the United States in the Copa America Centenario semifinals. It was yet another magical moment in the career of one of the best to ever play the sport.
With 55 goals scored on the international level, you get to thinking, which were his best ever? Our friends at Univision must've been thinking the same thing, because they put together a Top 5 list of Messi's best ever Argentina goals:
In their opinion, the free kick against the U.S. was his best ever international goal. While there's no debating it was a wonderful goal, I have a conspiracy theory about this. Univision is a company partial to the Mexico national team. They have a vested interest in their matches. The No. 3 goal was an insane chipped goal against Mexico. In my humble opinion, that should've been No. 1 instead. That's just a simply brilliant goal that you rarely see.
Of course, that could just be my American bias talking. But I love Leo either way. What a player and what a treat it is to get to watch him play. Even if he knocked my country out of a major international tournament... *cries uncontrollably*

With two major international tournaments coinciding this summer, one involving Argentina and the other involving Portugal, the Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi debate has been reignited.
ESPN have made their voice known with their 2016 ESPY nominations. The nominees for the "Best International Athlete" category includes two footballers. One of which is Cristiano Ronaldo while the other is Barcelona striker and Pichichi winner, Luis Suarez.
The other three nominees are tennis star Novak Djokovic, LPGA star Lydia Ko, and boxer Canelo Alvarez.
Absent from the nominee list is reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi.
This doesn't really make much sense at all. ESPN are basically claiming they know more about the sport than the cast of legends and important dignitaries who voted for Messi on the Ballon d'Or ballot.
Anyone who's ever watch ESPN programming probably isn't surprised by this lack of soccer knowledge. I mean come on:
Their soccer takes are about as interesting and meaningful as my takes on Broadway musicals. I wouldn't mind watching one every once in a while, but I'm not about to put together the Tony awards nominee list.
