Barcelona defender reportedly out for the season with knee injury

The FIFA Virus has struck Barcelona.

Blaugrana defender Jérémy Mathieu suffered a knee injury in France's 4-2 win against Russia on Tuesday after only eight minutes on the pitch. The Frenchman walked off on his own powers, but further testings did not give him and coach Luis Enrique good news.

According to reports in Spain, Mathieu has a torn meniscus in his knee, which requires surgery and a five-month recovery process. If the reports are accurate, the defender is out for the season, and will also miss this summer's EURO in his home country.

After a struggling start to this season, Mathieu finally returned to the great form he had in his first campaign with the Blaugrana, where he was a key squad member due to his versatility and physicality. His ability to play as a central defender and full-back was vital to his coach, and when the news are official, Enrique will lose a main man coming off the bench.

Mathieu is evidently going to miss this Saturday's El Clásico against Real Madrid, and will be a big blow to Lucho's rotation system. Now, bench warmers like Marc Bartra and Thomas Vermaelen are required to step up, and will be necessary in the home stretch of the season.

Get well soon, Mathieu.
