A review of Jordi Llompart's movie, Barça Dreams.
Back in October of last year, you may remember the release of Barça Dreams, a historical look into the background of the club. This April, the movie is set for a DVD release and Barca Blaugranes were sent a copy to give our verdict.
Barça Dreams is the project of acclaimed movie director and writer, Jordi Llompart and focuses on the story behind one of the most successful institutions in sporting history. The story really comes to life with extraordinary archive footage that shows a time before every blade of grass was televised and is accompanied by in-depth interviews with both historians and ex-players.
Like with most stories, the film begins at the start and with the formation of the club by Joan Gamper. Mixed with some fascinating photographs of the era, the narrator tells the story of how a group of eleven men playing amateur football formed the world giants that we know today.
Over the next hour and a half, you travel through the timeline of the club. You experience life under Franco and the pressure it put on the club, you see the emergence of the first football superstars such as László Kubala and you see the flame ignite in the fierce El Clásico rivalry due to the controversial transfer of Alfredo Di Stéfano. These are stories many Barça fans will be familiar with but Barça Dreams expands on them and fills in details you may not have known previously.
As the film progresses, we began to enter the recent eras of the club. The audience is treated to the arrival of Johan Cruyff, a man of unequivocal importance and who laid out the blueprint for future generations. We see the Dutchman arrive as a player and win the league in his first year before returning as a manager and creating The Dream Team featuring the likes of Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.
The closing of the film focuses on the recent eras and the extraordinary success of the present side. We see the emergence of Lionel Messi, we see Guardiola's return as manager and we see the formation of Barça's Trident through the arrival of Neymar and Luis Suárez. As we are still living this generation, it is easy to forget just how incredible this period has been but the movie allows you to look back and take account of it all.
For a team that is now so used to making history, it is only right to peer into the club's history and look at the men who laid the groundwork for the Barça of today. Backed with the opinions of stars such as Lionel Messi, Xavi, Gary Lineker, Johan Cruyff and Andrés Iniesta, it is a beautifully shot chronology that allows Barça fans and non-Barça fans to learn more about this club.
Barça Dreams is released on the 25th of April.
