Barcelona reached 37 straight games without a loss after winning a twelfth consecutive La Liga match with a 55-minute masterclass and a 6-0 destruction of Getafe on a happy Saturday afternoon at Camp Nou. Here are a few takeaways from another great game.
1. Arda Turan is starting to shine
The criticism thrown in the Turkish's way after his somewhat underwhelming first two months in a Blaugrana shirt was completely out of line, and for many reasons. For starters, he didn't play for six months, and he was far away from match shape, especially with his teammates on the peak of their physical form in the middle of the season. He needed time to adapt his body to play competitive football every three days. Plus, he joined a club with a unique playing style and system developed and perfected for almost two years under Luis Enrique.
It was unfair to ask Arda to play like his best days at Atlético Madrid after just two months. Now, he is clearly adapted to the style, his teammates and the overall system. He has now had two very impressive starts in a row, and scored twice in the last three games. He did have a tough time in the beginning, but that was totally expected. Give him more time, and he's going to be even better.
THIS IS ARDA!
2. Sergi Samper is going to be a star
Seeing the kid get his league debut was really nice. Now all he needs is some consistency, and he might get it next season. But every time I see Samper with the big boys, I see a big boy too. If you expect him to be Sergio Busquets, he's not going to be. To be fair, nobody can be. Because of his lack of real defensive skills, we might see him play the Xavi role in the upcoming years. No matter what position, I am confident Samper will be in the future midfield. His awareness, positioning and passing ability catch your eyes immediately. He will never blow you away with spectacular through balls or last-second tackles, but he's just perfect to run the machine, the kind of player Barça always needs.
The best thing is: Samper is patient, and he knows it's going to take time until he has a real shot at this team. But he works hard, is a good listener and tries his best on the pitch. And he is talented. And he is young. Watch out for Samper.
3. Sergi Roberto is now indispensable
Yes, I've said it. And I don't think many people will disagree. Roberto has won all of our hearts, and he's won Lucho's heart as well. Roberto can be trusted to play everywhere and do everything, and he's going to be just fine. Like Samper, he will not blow you away. But he's going to do his job and he's doing it well, without trying to take the spotlight away from the stars or trying to do things he knows he can't do. We were all told he was the next genius in the midfield coming out of La Masia. He never lived up to the hype, but he worked hard enough to turn things around and become the twelfth man in Enrique's rotation. Good work, kid.
