A bad performance, but third place is guaranteed.
Barcelona ended the season with a 1-0 win over Eibar at the Basque Country to ensure they will finish La Liga in third place thanks to a great goal from Antoine Griezmann, which was the only highlight of a terrible performance from Barça in what definitely felt like Ronald Koeman’s last game in charge.
FIRST HALF
Barcelona’s first half performance can only be described with one word: pathetic. The Blaugrana were awful for the entire opening 45 minutes, despite having two thirds of the possession. They missed easy passes in midfield, created absolutely nothing of note and had a wide-open defense which was easily exploited by the worst team in La Liga.
Eibar were in complete control and deserved to score at least once, but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Neto kept Barça in the game. The home team played with great intensity and pressed high up the pitch throughout the half, and were always dangerous with their play on the wings.
At halftime, a truly awful Barça were somehow not losing, and there was a chance they could get better in the second half because there was simply no way they could be worse.
SECOND HALF
Ronald Koeman made three changes and switched the team’s formation at halftime, but Barça continued to look uninspired and slow in possession, and Eibar continued to be a threat on the counter attack. Riqui Puig came on and added his usual energy and ball-carrying, but none of his teammates seemed to want to play with the same intensity.
As the half went on, however, Ousmane Dembélé began growing into the game and taking matters into his own hands with solo runs into the defense, and one of them resulted in Barça’s only goal as his cross found Antoine Griezmann who scored a gorgeous volley to put Barça ahead with 10 minutes to go.
Eibar tried going forward to equalize and Inui hit the crossbar in the dying seconds, but the final whistle came to give Barça a victory they didn’t deserve, but third place is assured and 7 million euros in extra prize money are in the bank.
Ronald Koeman is definitely not staying and he looked like he knew it for the entire 90 minutes. But even if this was somehow a final audition for the job next season, he failed and didn’t help Barça at all. Story of the season.
