And he’s not wrong
Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman said Saturday’s defeat to Cadiz was a “giant step backwards” after watching his team slip 12 points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.
It was another poor performance on the road from the Catalan giants who have now lost three of their five away fixtures in La Liga in 2020-21.
Koeman’s men had been in good form ahead of the game with big wins over Dynamo Kiev, Ferencvaros and Osasuna, but there’s no doubt this is a big setback.
“It’s a giant step backwards in our chances of fighting for LaLiga. It’s disappointing, but we have to accept it. A gap of 12 points to a team as strong as Atletico Madrid is a lot.
“There are still a lot of games to play but if we don’t improve our attitude and our ups and downs away from home, we can’t say any more.”
Barcelona had plenty of possession against Cadiz but struggled again to create clear-cut opportunities and were let down by some dismal defending that Koeman found difficult to explain.
“We lost due to an unexpected mistake that you cannot make. It came from not being focused. The attitude wasn’t good tonight, and not just from the defenders.
“It’s very hard to explain some of the goals that we’ve conceded. I think it might be because of a lack of concentration. We lack aggression without the ball.
“That might be why we concede. It’s not easy to explain that second goal.”

Barca’s next away game is not until December 22 when they travel to Real Valladolid just before Christmas. Before then Koeman’s men face Juventus, Levante, Real Sociedad, and Valencia at the Camp Nou.
