The latest from the Barcelona boss

Quique Setien spoke to the press on Friday afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Unsurprisingly, the Barcelona boss faced lots and lots of questions about Arthur, talked about Riqui Puig’s chances of starting and the threat his team will face from Celta.

Here are the best bits

Setien on Arthur Part 1

What’s happening now is completely out of the ordinary. I suppose any player who finds himself in any situation like this has to be clear the season isn’t over and there are still very important games to play. I’m sure Arthur, like the rest of his team-mates, wants to end the season well, win a trophy and leave behind a good memory until the final day they are here.

Setien on Arthur Part 2

The club haven’t told me that Arthur is going to leave, neither has he left. We are going to have a training session, he’s going to come with us to Vigo and he’ll be with us for the final games that’s for sure. If this situation does come about I’ll try to convince him he needs to focus and that he has important things to offer. To leave a good memory in case this happens. The club are paying you money until the final day so you have to be committed.

Setien on Riqui Puig starting

It could be a good moment. The reality is that he’s going to have more of a chance with the absence of several important players. That opens up more possibilities but he also had opportunities before with everyone available but we considered it wasn’t the time. These are all circumstances you have to analyse based on how you see these players from the academy performing and understanding what they can do in specific games.

Setien on how Puig can improve

I think Riqui has made important progress in the time we’ve spent with him. His attitude has been excellent, extraordinary but there have been things we’ve had to indicate to him so he gets more comfortable with the team’s needs and what he can offer us. There was a period in which there was thinking he had to adapt to. We’ve seen recently that’s he performed in the minutes we’ve given him, in training sessions too, and we’ve seen that attitude and commitment of what we’ve asked of him. That’s the way forward, this is a process. For some it will take longer, for some it will take less time. We need him to keep this level of performance up and offer this version of himself permanently because this is the way to have more chance of playing. Bear in mind we are at Barca and the best players are here.

Setien on Real Madrid slipping up

I’m still convinced of course. We’ve got seven more games to play and it’s very difficult for a side like Madrid or us to win very single game. We’ve drawn one, they still haven’t, but football is a game that sometimes surprises us. They are in good form, just like we are, in many ways but anything can happen. Of course I aspire and trust they will make a mistake at some point.

Setien on Rafinha

He’s playing very well. He’s at a good level right now for his team. Celta have managed to boost morale with their recent results and each player is giving a good showing of their potential. I think Rafinha is doing a great job, he’s a great player with a lot of talent. Like Denis, Iago Aspas, I’ve always liked them especially when they link up.
