Victor Font is alarmed over deals to age the squad up
An already-old team gets a bit older if Barcelona’s proposed swap with Juventus goes through. Reports say the Catalans will swap 23-year-old Arthur for 30-year-old Miralem Pjanić, in a team that had a starting XI with an average age of 29.9 in a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao recently - and that was with Arthur.
Victor Font, who has announced his candidacy for the Catalans’ club is worried that recent dealings made by the current board will result in a decline similar to that experienced by AC Milan.
Milan is one of the world’s most storied clubs, but it declined heavily after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2007. They had one last hurrah in 2011, winning a weakened Serie A.
However, their players grew older and declined, and the team sold off their two best assets - Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimović - to Paris Saint-Germain in 2012. By 2013, they were finishing eighth in their own league, and have since been bypassed conclusively by Juventus. Currently, they are 7th, and have not won any silverware since 2011 apart from the Supercoppa Italiana in 2016.
“We have it quite clear that if there is no project similar to ours, we are in danger of becoming the new Milan, a club with many titles that no longer competes,” Font said on a podcast.
Font is promoting a “new model” that would change a lot of what has been done under Josep Maria Bartomeu’s reign.
