The champions have been knocked off top spot
Barcelona were knocked off top spot in La Liga on Sunday night after Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad in a controversial game at Anoeta.
The match was full of talking points with all three controversial decisions going in Real Madrid’s favour just days after Gerard Pique had hinted officials favour Los Blancos.
Vinícius Júnior won a dubious penalty, Mikel Merino saw an equaliser disallowed and Karim Benzema’s goal was allowed to stand after a check to see if he’d handled it.
Surprisingly enough the decisions did not go down well in Catalunya.
Mundo Deportivo’s front page doesn’t need any translation. The front page highlighted the three incidents and also talks about how VAR has helped Madrid in all three of their matches since La Liga resumed.
Sport were a tiny bit more subtle with their headline: “Leaders of VAR.” They also report on a “Scandal at Anoeta” and talk of how Barcelona need to get moving if they are to go on and retain their title.
Over at Marca and AS there was, unsurprisingly, very little focus on the refereeing decisions at Anoeta.
There is still some way to go in the title race. Both teams have eight games left to play, starting with Barcelona’s clash against Athletic on Tuesday at the Camp Nou.
