In anticipation of Alexis Sanchez' upcoming competitive debut for Arsenal, why not take a look back at the Chilean's final match in a Barcelona jersey and his wonder goal against Atletico Madrid
Former FC Barcelona forward and fan favourite Alexis Sanchez returns to competitive club action today, as he prepares to make his debut for new club Arsenal FC in their Premier League season opener against managerless Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. The decision to sell Alexis was a divisive one amongst Culés; while there are some who remember the first couple of seasons of Sanchez' stay at the Camp Nou in which he struggled for consistency and squandered a number of chances, there are others who were won over by the Chilean's work ethic, personality and for his performances in an otherwise forgettable 2013-14 campaign under Gerardo 'Tata' Martino.
Certainly, he was a player whose stock was on the rise, figuratively speaking, and yet the Blaugrana did not make a particularly handsome profit on his sale -- they even reinvested over double that amount in a player who was ultimately suspended in Luis Suarez. However, what's done is done -- FC Barcelona are moving on, Arsenal fans are looking to the future and before we Culés join them, let's relive one of Alexis' better moments in a Blaugrana jersey.
So, as Alexis prepares to take to the field for the first time in an Arsenal jersey, let's look back at his final match in the famous Barça strip, the season-ending 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou and his memorable opening goal.
From the other side of the stadium, I had to do a double-take before I realised what had happened: Alexis had done the impossible, scoring a sensational goal from a scarcely-believable angle against the best goalkeeper in La Liga. For a glorious half-an-hour or so, we were on course for the title.
Que sera sera and whatnot...
