Official: Ibrahim Afellay Loaned to Olympiacos FC

Goodbye, Ibi

It's now official: Ibrahim Afellay will not come back to Barcelona. The 28-year-old Dutch will be loaned to Olympiacos for the 2014-15 season, both clubs confirmed on Sunday. Since this is Afellay's last contract year with Barça, he is free to go anywhere he wants after this season.

Barça's website announced the news, along with a quick description of Ibi's Blaugrana career:

"Afellay has been at FCB since 2010, and has played 35 games for the first team since then. In his first season, he had some especially memorable performances in the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup and the Champions League against Almeria and Real Madrid, respectively.

But on September 22, 2011, he suffered a serious injury that side-lined him until April 2012. He played five games towards the end of the season, and in the summer was loaned out to Schalke 04 in Germany, where despite a good start, he fell victim once again to an injury.

Last season he rejoined the Barça first team, but only played in two official matches, against Malaga in La Liga and Levante in the cup. This is the last season of Afellay's contract at Barça."

Olympiacos announced the news on Instagram, with a photo of Afellay with the team's jersey:

I mean, it's not like we're going to miss him a lot, but Afellay was part of Barça's super-team that won everything with Pep Guardiola, and he played well that season. He just wasn't the same anymore.

We wish you luck, Ibi!
