Nice stats for you, people.
On Sunday night, FC Barcelona started their quest to regain control of La Liga with a great 3-0 win against Elche CF, that saw a dominant display by the Blaugrana, despite playing with only ten men on the pitch in the entire second half. And Lionel Messi was there to score the first official Barça goal of the season. And since our friends statistics are always interesting, that means Barcelona could be on the way back to glories this season.
That's because it was the third time in Messi's career that he scored the first official Barcelona League goal of the season. The other two times? 2008/2009 and 2010/2011. I'm sure you remember those seasons. Under Pep Guardiola, Messi shined bright and the Blaugrana went on to win La Liga and the UEFA Champions League in the same season.
#OJOALDATO - En las 2 temporadas en las que Messi marcó el primer gol liguero del Barça, su equipo hizo doblete (ganó Liga y Copa de Europa)

In the two seasons that Messi scored the first Barça League goal, the team went on to win La Liga and Champions League.
Want another interesting stat? Barça won 3-0 in their Liga debut in 2009/10 and 2010/11, and went on to become Spain's champions at the end of the campaign. Interesting, right?
Of course, this is pure nerd stuff. Stats are not definitive predictions of the future. But they are nice things to look at to see if history will repeat itself. One thing is for sure? Messi will keep scoring goals. Will that lead to titles? We hope so.
