Time to look to the future?
The fallout from Barcelona’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain continues with Sport reporting that the club now plan to focus on their young players for the rest of the 2020-21 season.
Thursday’s front page features the pictures of young stars Pedri, Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati and Ilaix Moriba and news that the club realize it will be difficult to win a title this season and want to prioritize giving young players “maximum prominence” and first-team minutes.
The report reckons that Ronald Koeman won’t give up on any of the competitions just yet but wants to see his young players develop so they can go on and enjoy success in the future.
The Dutch coach is aware that a new Barca team needs to be built and his post-match comments in midweek suggest he thinks he’s already well on the way: “I know where I am and what we have to change. We’re trying. We’re not at the end of the path yet, we’re halfway down it.”
Koeman wants to place focus in youngsters who are already in and around the team and “others who are waiting for their opportunity.” The club’s financial situation also means it’s a good idea to bet on youth with big-name signings unlikely for a while.
