Can Barcelona’s leaky defense finally get it done vs. PSG?

The Champions League tie may rest on a defense that’s had many problems

FC Barcelona haven’t kept a clean sheet in six matches straight, but they’re gonna need the defense to operate at a higher level if they want to get by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League today.

The Catalans have been plagued by individual mistakes and growing pains this season, even when the attack has finally blossomed with Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann simultaneously hitting form.

The defense has been hit hard by injuries.

Ronald Araújo has been a revelation for Barcelona this season, but he’s sadly not available due to injury. Gerard Piqué, Barcelona’s star defender for over a decade, has returned to full health but he may not be quite ready for this game, either.

That leaves Clément Lenglet alongside Óscar Mingueza as the team’s likely starters, unless Ronald Koeman goes with Samuel Umtiti or even Frenkie de Jong at the back.

Sergiño Dest could be making a return to the XI after some time out due to injury. He reappeared in the last match and seemed ready to build on that to start today.

Jordi Alba seems a shoe-in at the left-back spot, despite Junior Firpo scoring in the previous game.

Of course, they will have to be supported by the rest of the team to prevent scoring opportunities. An away goal could prove vital to PSG, who have never won at Camp Nou but arguably have their best chance to this year.
