The Catalan giants move up to third in the table
Ronald Koeman seemed relieved after seeing his Barcelona team pick up a much-needed victory on Wednesday against Elche.
Two goals from Lionel Messi and a Jordi Alba goal were enough to secure all three points and bounce back from poor results against Cadiz and Paris Saint-Germain.
Koeman spoke about the match after the game and was happy with the way his side improved after a poor first half.
“We needed to win after the last two results. We played really well in the second half. We have to do better than the first half.
“We were slack in the first half, we didn’t have any rhythm, despite the two chances we had. In the second half, much better. With more rhythm with the ball. We also scored quickly, which helped. I was unhappy with the rhythm and what we did with the ball before that. It was all a little slow.”
The Barca boss made changes at the interval, taking off Miralem Pjanic and bringing on Ousmane Dembele. Koeman says the former Juventus man needs to improve.
“He has to improve his rhythm on the ball and know his position. If you substitute a player, it seems like he’s to blame for a bad first half, but it’s not like that. The others didn’t give rhythm to the game.
“We dropped Messi to No.10 and opened up the pitch with Dembele to get depth. That’s why I made the change.”
The victory should help boost confidence ahead of some important fixtures for Barcelona over the new week or two, starting with Saturday’s trip to Sevilla.
