De Ligt turns down Barcelona - report

The defender has already made his mind up

Matthijs de Ligt has turned down Barcelona, according to Onda Cero. This could mean the end to a very long transfer saga which saw many top teams competing for his signature. Paris Saint-Germain are said to be favorites to land the Ajax star.

It was well known that PSG would offer more money than Barcelona, but this report tells us that it’s not just the economic issue. The other factor was that De Ligt thought he would not get enough playing time at Barça. He thinks he won’t grow as well if he’s not the undisputed starter, according to the report. It seems De Ligt thought PSG were more likely to allow him that, .

Barcelona had already signed his Ajax and Netherlands teammate Frenkie de Jong, and there was optimism the two could come together to the Camp Nou. However, it seems De Ligt has decided to carve his own path.

Perhaps influencing matters is the fact that Barcelona has three starting-caliber defenders: Gerard Piqué, Clément Lenglet, and Samuel Umtiti. In addition, the Catalans have an exciting prospect, Jean-Clair Todibo.

However, several factors had made Barcelona seek De Ligt. Piqué is getting older and could be retiring in the next few years, while Umtiti missed most of last season due to injury.

It remains to be seen whether Barça will go to the transfer market for another defender if this turns out to be true, or stick by the players they already have.
